There are times when all of us get stressed out and need a little tender loving care and the good thing is that there are lots of easy, cheap ways to have some alternative therapy in Hanoi.

Due to the geographical location next to China, the vast majority of the therapies on offer are Chinese based -so these are the types of therapy that you will find locally. There are other more Western types of therapy – such as counselling and NLP(neuro linguistic programming ) ; however these are usually only offered by qualified expats who are living in Vietnam. As a result, instead of being priced at a Vietnamese level, the costs are comparable to prices in the West making it seem incredibly expensive for people living in Vietnam ( and getting a Vietnamese salary !)

On the other hand, the local Chinese style medicine therapies are incredibly affordable and well worth checking out – you don’t need to have a specific problem to go and visit – you may simply feel tired or stressed or just feel in need of a little boost!

The two most common forms of alternative therapy are yoga and massage – these can be found throughout Vietnam and are simple and easy to find. More specific kinds of therapy freely available in Vietnam are :

Acupuncture

To many in the West, the thought of sticking lots of needles into your body for fun seems a contraction in terms. However, acupuncture does not hurt at all and is in fact very relaxing!

There are two main places for acupuncture in Hanoi – Yakushi Centre and Zenith Yoga. Both of these are located in Tay Ho ( which is the ex-pat area of the city and located about 15 minutes from the old quarter )

Both of these locations are not easy to find so be sure to look them up well before trying to find them! Yakushi Centre is down a tiny alleyway off the main road and you may be put off when you get there as it all looks quite old. However, it is more rustic rather than old and it is very clean and friendly once you get inside!

Zenith yoga is also located down an alley from the main road however it is a much bigger building so easier to find – it is located in a new building on the first floor.

For acupuncture, there is a need to be undressed to your underwear ( you will be given a blanket to cover yourself up ! ) and initially, the practitioner will check your Chi ( internal energy ) by looking at your tongue and feeling your wrists/ankles etc

There is no need to converse – all the practitioner will need is the reason why you have come e.g. due to stress/pain in the knee etc.

Instead, you simply lie there and they will carefully put the needles in ( which is painless ) and you just relax!

An acupuncture session will typically last between forty-five minutes to an hour.

Acupuncture is totally pain freeAcupressure

This is basically acupuncture without the needles! If you like the idea of acupuncture but really don’t like needles then this is the best option for you.

Acupressure works by applying pressure to the meridian lines to stop energy blockages. There is no need for you to know anything about this, however- you simply lie down and the practitioner will apply pressure ( by pressing with their hand ) to various points.

Cupping

This is something that is becoming more popular in the West and during the Olympics etc you may have noticed people with round circles on their backs from the cupping process! The idea behind cupping is that the heat and pressure brings out the impurities in your body and cleanses it.

As with acupuncture, you have cupping without clothes ( only underwear ) Cupping occurs only on your back and you simply lie down and the practitioner heats up small glass containers which are suctioned onto your skin. These feel warm and are totally painless.

When the glass container ( cup ) is removed it makes a loud sucking noise, however, it is a noise only and you feel nothing.

For some people the cupping process may leave round red marks on your back ( which fade within a couple of days ) however for others there will be no marks at all – it just depends on your skin and how long the cupping is left on.

Cupping can be given as a separate treatment or combined with acupuncture – and is available at Yakushi Centre in Hanoi.

Although cupping looks painful it is totally pain freeReiki

Reiki is a Chinese healing method in which the practitioner uses energy to unlock the meridian lines and make the Chi ( the life energy force ) flow around your body – which makes you feel physically and emotionally better!

One of the advantages of Reiki is that this is carried out fully clothed – so great if you are not really sure about these alternative practices and feel too exposed without your clothes. In addition, it is a contact free practise – so great if you don’t really like being touched.

Reiki is available at Zenith Yoga and typically takes an hour.

For Reiki you stay fully clothedSound Healing

Sound healing may initially seem a little strange – to be lying down whilst someone bangs a gong over you – however, once you try it you will find it incredibly relaxing. As with all of the Chinese alternative practises, the purpose is to align your body and allow the flow of Chi ( life energy force )

As with Reiki, sound healing takes place fully clothed – you simply lie down and the practitioner will have different-sized metal bowls which are “ played “ to align you. There is no need to discuss anything – instead, the practitioner will target the areas which are needed.

Sound healing is available at Zenith yoga in Hanoi and shortly classes will be available at New Manta Yoga and retreat ( which is located on Walking Street – just up from Tay Ho – and about 20 minutes from the old quarter )

Sound healing involves various different sized bowls being played around your bodyMediation

Although meditation is popular, it is very hard to find meditation classes in English, with most of the meditation classes being in Vietnamese.

Overall, although alternative therapy in the West can be super expensive and thus typically used when you have a specific problem and traditional medicine is not working for you, in Vietnam with very affordable prices, it is easy to experiment with these types of healing. Even if nothing happens during your treatment, at least it is an experience and who knows – you may have an amazing experience and become a holistic medicine addict!

It won’t take long living in Vietnam for you to realise that exercise is a huge thing – from the very young to the very old. You will see the parks full of people exercising early in the morning – the free outdoor gyms are always busy – and it is inevitable that after a while you will start to think about joining a gym in Vietnam.

For most foreigners, although there are free outdoor areas, the most comfortable and familiar way is to join a gym. There are various types of gyms in Vietnam – some dedicated to things like kick boxing, others dedicated to dance or yoga – however, there are various gyms which offer the basics as in the West.

What do I find in a gym in Vietnam?

There are two main categories of gym in Vietnam – local and international. The local gyms are catered to Vietnamese and are generally more basic. They will have a series of weights, an exercise area and some basic machines, such as running or rowing etc.

These vary tremendously – from simply one large room with lockers in the corners and no showers to various small rooms with a couple of showers.

The international gyms cater for both Vietnamese and ex-pats and thus look a lot more like the sort of gym you would find in the West.

Both local and international gyms offer classes – yoga and Zumba are the most popular classes and typically last for one hour. The more international the gym the larger they typically are and thus the variety of classes is increased – to include classes such as cardio/bums and tums etc.

Although in Vietnam you will find that the attitude towards time is flexible, in relation to classes at a gym in Vietnam, you will be surprised to find that they always start exactly on time. In most places, it is strongly discouraged or even not allowed for participants to join once the class has started as there is the belief that if you miss the warm up then you will not be able to carry out the class.

Which gym in Vietnam you should go to?

It all depends on what you are looking for. There are positives and negatives for both types of gym – for the local gym you have a chance to feel that you are in Vietnam and living a real life – have a chance to meet a lot of Vietnamese people and have access to the basics at a very reasonable price.

On the downside, there is a tendency in Vietnam for people to look and talk about ex-pats – so you would attract a lot of attention and your every move is scrutinised. Some of the machines may not always work and since there are limited materials you may have to wait to use things.

The international style gym in Vietnam will make you feel very comfortable as this will be a setting that you are familiar with – there are more than enough pieces of equipment and you are able to work quietly and peacefully with minimal or no stares.

However, these are more corporate style gyms and thus much less friendly – the pace is higher and the focus is more on how to push additional offers so that they can earn more!

The price range

This is a minefield! – for the local gyms there is usually a written price list – which tells you clearly how much a daily session is – a monthly subscription etc. – however for the more international gyms, there is a horrendous system of bargaining.

This means that some people will have the same subscription as you at a significantly lower price – it is dependent on the maximum amount of money that they think you can afford.

No matter how good you are at bargaining, you will be surprised at how good everyone at the gym is at the hard sell. It is more like being in a timeshare meeting. This is not restricted to the marketing and desk people – it is also with the personal instructors – so beware!

Many of the larger gyms advertise special offers with free or minimal prices for a day/week’s trial – however, when you get there you will be highly pressurised to join – with all sorts of added extras such as a personal trainer / special access offers etc.

It is possible to simply take the free offers. However, you will find that after enduring the first hour-long pressurised talk then you have to walk into the gym quickly to avoid being caught by the marketing / personal trainers who will start their spiel at you once more!

What do gyms offer and what do you need to take?

The gyms vary tremendously with the small extras. Although in the West at a gym it is usual to have a free locker, free towel and free shower gel, these are not necessarily given for free.

Instead, many gyms offer packages where you need to pay a bit extra to have these “luxuries “– however, it all adds up. I would recommend that instead if you need a towel then invest in a special compact quick drying super absorbent type of towel which you will find in Decathlon for about 50,000 VND – and you can buy your own lock very easily – irritating to walk around with a heavy lock – but worth it in the long run!

All of the gyms offer free water – some will give free paper cups however most require participants to take their own bottles.

Overall, there is a wide choice of gyms to choose from in Vietnam – from the tiny backstreet one room style to the four floor metropolis of the international gyms.  Take advantage of the free trials to try them for yourself before joining a gym in Vietnam – and remember to take the hard sell in your stride and treat it as a Vietnamese experience!

If you are in Vietnam for a longer period of time then it is inevitable that at some stage then you will not feel well and have to visit the clinic. This will be a very different experience to your visits in the West so it is best to be prepared so that you are not shocked by the differences and the way things are done. This guide today will let you know what to prepare and what to do when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam.

Which clinic to visit?

visiting-a-health-clinic-in-vietnam-my-complete-guide

If you have health insurance then you will have been provided with a list of clinics to visit. This is because there are two types of payment – one will be with the clinics that are affiliated with your health insurance and thus you need to only pay the base amount (this varies depending on your health care provider and typically is about 600,000 VND to 800,000 VND per visit)

The other clinics you need to pay upfront and get all of the receipts and then fill in forms and submit these at a later date. It is essential to make sure that all of the forms from the clinic are fully stamped, dated, and signed and that you get the red receipt (which is the formal receipt)

Both processes are fine – it is more important to find a clinic that you feel suits and then the payment section can be sorted out later.

What to take with you when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam

It is essential for you to take your passport with you to the clinic – especially if you are using your health insurance card. This is so that they can verify that you are the person on the card – and that it is not someone else’s card that you have borrowed.

Some places will accept a scanned picture on your phone of your passport and some places will even accept some other form of identification e.g., driving licence. However, it is at all possible it is better to take your passport to be on the safe side.

What happens when you get there?

When visiting a health clinic in Vietnam, you will first need to go to the reception. Although some very popular clinics have appointment times, in general, most people simply don’t feel well and then go along to the clinic.

It is advised that you go early since many clinics have long (two hours or more) lunchtimes so you may find that you have to wait for results over the long lunchtime if you start the day too late.

At the reception

At the reception

You will need to fill in a basic form and write a line or two of what your symptoms are. This will enable the receptionist to determine which of the doctors you need to see.

You will then be directed off to your first room. This will be the blood pressure and temperature room – regarding of what is wrong with you, this is the standard room that everyone goes to first. If it is your first visit then you may also have your height and weight measured.

See the doctors

After your blood pressure / temperature then you will go to another room to see the doctor. You will find that the doctors may not be able to speak much English when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam (even in the big cities such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh).

As a result, remember to speak slowly and clearly. If there is confusion then use Google translate when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam!

Unlike in the West, where this visit to the general doctor is usually the start and finish of your visit, this is simply a quick visit and the doctor will send you off for a million and one tests.

Medical tests in Vietnam

It is essential to note that unlike the West where tests are a rare thing, they are pretty common when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam. It is very rare to go to see the doctor and not at least to have a blood test – so don’t panic and imagine that there is something seriously wrong with you when you suddenly realise that you are having a multitude of tests!

Once you have been in Vietnam for a while and get used to having tests, then you will become more aware of which ones are really needed and which are simply additional ways to make money for the clinic. The more honest clinics will only order things that you really need – however there are many that will prescribe more than are needed simply as a money-making exercise!

As a result, always look at the tests that are prescribed whilst you are talking to the doctor to make sure that you agree with them.

Blood test

The most basic test will be the blood test – this will be done on the premises (most likely in the room that you initially went for your blood pressure) It will be impossible to go to the clinic and not have your blood tested!

If you have any throat problem – e.g., a sore throat and a cough – then you will need to go and see the ear, throat, and nose specialist department. Do not be alarmed that you will be examined with a machine that has a camera and pictures are taken of inside your ear / throat etc. This is perfectly normal in Vietnam and does not mean that you have some serious illness!

X-rays test

x-rays-test

Chest x-rays are also quite a common procedure – so do not be surprised and overly concerned if you need an x-ray if you go to the doctors with a cough!

If you have a stomach problem, then in addition to urine and stool tests, then it is highly likely that you will have an ultrasound to check your insides! Do not worry if you are asked to have an ultrasound – like the other tests this is a normal procedure in Vietnam and does not indicate that there is anything seriously wrong with you!

You will be prescribed a huge amount of medication – however minor your ailment!

Medication

After the million and one tests, then you will need to go back and see the original doctor to get the results. Unlike the West where the result of tests can take days if not weeks, the results will be available in a very short time and usually within an hour you will have all results.

You then go back and visit the doctor and get the results. Make sure that you are clear with what you have whilst you are seeing the doctor (using google translate if needed) It is at this stage that you need to ask for sick leave if you feel that you need it. Doctors in Vietnam are usually very generous with allocated sick leave, so you will probably get a minimum of three days for most common ailments. You will need the sick leave for your work, so do be sure to ask for this paper.

You will inevitably be given a very long list of medications to take when visiting a health clinic in Vietnam. Vietnamese doctors love to give an overload of tablets – with these usually being a combination of medicated and homeopathic tablets. Again, do not worry about the extremely large bag of medications that you have been prescribed. It does not mean that you are seriously ill – simply that there are both tablets for general health and stomach protection etc as well as the actual medication for your condition.

Note that if you have medical insurance, then you may need to wait for about twenty minutes whilst the clinic contacts the insurance company to see if you are eligible for the medication costs. This is perfectly normal and does not indicate that your insurance will not work!!

All in all…

Visiting a health clinic in Vietnam, or any other countries is stressful, as you don’t feel well and thus find it harder to cope with things. As a result, when visiting a clinic in Vietnam, just remember to stay calm and not imagine all kinds of sickness and get frustrated with things – instead, simply accept that things are different and try as much as possible to simply go with the flow!!

Having been living with her family in Vietnam for several years, Mrs. Stephanie Mills knows the life in this country almost as well as any other Vietnamese. Please enjoy the series of articles about her experience living in our S-shaped nation! Today, the topic is about staying fit in Vietnam.

Staying fit in Vietnam

Is staying fit important to Vietnamese?

Fitness is a huge thing here in Vietnam and is not popular only with youngsters! I was shocked the first time I went out at about 6 am and found the park jam-packed with people walking, dancing, and using wooden swords ( fake ones – not real ! ) to work with martial arts.

There are two main ways to stay fit in Vietnam – a freeway or with a facility. Vietnam is probably one of the freest fitness geared countries in the world. You will find on many street corners a series of free mental fitness machines. These range from simple machines that you simply stand next to and move with your hands to sit up machines and machines which you stand on and rock. You will be probably spotting these in most of the parks of Vietnam.

Although in the West it would be a rather embarrassing thing to stand on the street corner doing exercises, in Vietnam, you will not get a second glance. It is fine to use these machines whilst wearing your normal clothes. So if you come across some whilst out going to the shops then you can pop your bag down and have a quick five-minute exercise session. Alternatively, it is fine to get geared up in your exercise kit and use the equipment.

There are two main times for exercise where you will find all exercise areas and parks super busy – early in the morning (about 6 am) and early evening (around 6 pm) Although it may seem a little dangerous to be going out so early in the morning you will be surprised to see the number of people up and about and it is as safe this time in the morning as it is at midday.

If going on a machine is not really your thing then it is also fine to walk/jog – there are parks spread throughout Vietnam and these all have wide walking paths. The parks all have clean public toilets and often they have water fountains.

You will spot many groups out at the two key fitness times in the parks (6 am and 6 pm) – from aerobics and keep fit to dance. The majority of these groups are free and open to all so often it is simple to simply ask to join in (or use a bit of sign language if no English is spoken) and you can simply tag along at the back.

Gyms are always available with different ranges of price

If you prefer something more structured for staying fit or feel that outdoor exercise in the heat is not for you then there is a huge choice of gyms in Vietnam. Most apartment blocks have a gym – this may be free as part of the rent or a separate subscription. These are typical of a good standard and consist of a weight area, some exercise machines that focus on different muscle sets, running, cycling, or stepping machines, and a floor exercise area. Different gyms have different vibes. However, they do seem to be open to all and are not typically full of the intimidating male weight lifting types, which is quite a thing in gyms in the West.

Many apartments also have a pool, an ideal choice for staying fit in Vietnam. These can be outdoor (as Vietnam is a hot country – even in the North in Hanoi it is possible to use the outdoor pool from about April or May through to November) or indoor (known in Vietnam as a four seasons pool) Although bikinis are acceptable on beaches, they are unusual at a swimming pool so if unsure better to wear a swimming costume.

Tips for staying fit in Vietnam

  • If you do not live in an apartment then there is a huge choice of public exercise alternatives. The biggest gym chain is California – you can find these throughout the country and offer a huge range of facilities from pools to a variety of classes to kickboxing and personal trainers. It is important to note that there is not a set fee for California – instead, you have to do quite a lot of bargaining and negotiating to get a good deal. Ask around to find what the current standard rate is and see what sort of deal you can achieve. California typically offers a three-day free membership so you can test the range of facilities available.
  • If you prefer a smaller gym then you will find multiple choices – some for Vietnamese speakers only and others target the ex-pat community.
  • Different people are looking for different things so take the time to go for a free trial and feel how it is for you – a gym should not feel intimidating but instead welcoming so if you find it is not the place for you then simply join somewhere else – there is more than enough choice!
  • If you are looking for a specific sport then you will find it is probably available in Vietnam – some sports are more common such as kickboxing, taekwondo. and boxing, however, you will find that sports such as archery and horse riding are also available.
  • Ask your colleagues for places they know as personal recommendations are always the best, with a simple Google search typically bringing up a range of options that you can explore.

There are plenty of options for staying fit in Vietnam – from a free walk in the park to a set exercise class – so get your training gear on and start your exercise!

The demand for medical examination and treatment among the inhabitants and expats in Vietnam constantly increases during the Covid pandemic. Everyone wants to find a good hospital for having treatment and other health services. However, there are a huge number of private and public hospitals in Hanoi, so choosing the best one at an affordable cost is not an easy task. The top 7 best hospitals in Hanoi below can partly relieve the stress of doing so. Let’s check it out!

Top 7 Best Hospitals in Ha Noi

Hanoi Medical University Hospital

Top 7 Best Hospitals in Hanoi for Foreigners

Hanoi Medical University Hospital is the first among the best hospitals for foreigners in Hanoi listed here. This is a general hospital built on the foundations of Hanoi Medical University, which has been in operation for almost a century.

This prominent hospital uses a model that combines examinations, healthcare, treatment, and training and transferring techniques to students and professionals at a variety of medical facilities across the country.

I experienced treating service here, and I kindly suggest it for you because it has top-notch facilities with a team of highly qualified, enthusiastic, and gentle professionals. Moreover, it is very clean both in the treatment area and the campus. The medical examination and paraclinical areas are located close to each other, so moving is very convenient.

Do not worry about not knowing where to park when visiting this place, since it has a pretty well-constructed and spacious parking lot with a huge capacity.

The health-check price is from 120.000 – 1000.000 VND depending on your demand.

Address: No.1 Ton That Tung Street, Dong Da District

Bach Mai Hospital- one of the most well-known hospitals in Hanoi

Bach Mai hospital is considered one of the largest hospitals in Hanoi with multi-field treatment. It has over 2000 beds, 14 centers, 23 clinical departments, and 06 paraclinical departments that treat a wide range of diseases. Also, it has four institutes: the cardiovascular institute, the mental health institute, the medical assessment institute, and the health science institute.

Bach Mai Hospital always concentrates on investing in cutting-edge technology and advanced techniques, which puts it on par with other countries around the world. This is one of the places for vaccination against the Covid 19 virus, so if you are in need, visit here and get the vaccination at Building A11 in the campus of the hospital.

Due to being one of the central hospitals of Hanoi, there are a huge number of patients coming on a daily basis. Thus, please note that arriving early to get your number is essential, which keeps you from waiting for ages. Do not forget to protect your personal belongings from theft, and do wear a medical mask to prevent infection from others.

The cost of medical examination here ranges from 80,000 – 20,000,000 VND

Address: 78 Giai Phong, Phuong Mai Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi

Vietnam-France Hospital

When making a check-up at Vietnam-France hospital, you will be consulted and examined by a team of French and Vietnamese doctors. One of the doctors that impressed me the most is Dr. Vu Quang Huy, with years of experience working for Diethelm, ROHTO, and Dr. Reddy as medical representatives, supervisors, and medical management in Northern Vietnam.

Due to being one of the most famous international hospitals in Hanoi, the price is a little high for those who are on a budget. In contrast, if you are financially generous, this hospital is for you because, according to my experiences, staff and service here are worth voting five stars.

Its price ranges from 995.000 – 4.000.000 VND.

Address: No. 1, Phuong Mai Street, Dong Da District

Vinmec International General Hospital

Vinmec International General Hospital – the first hospital in the Vinmec medical system chain to be put into operation, invested by VinGroup. This prestigious private one in the capital provides high-quality medical examination and treatment in Hanoi’s most opulent Times City area.

Being at the top of the best hospitals in Hanoi, it gathers a team of professional pharmacists, doctors, and nurses who have studied abroad for many years.

Vinmec is proud to be Vietnam’s first hospital to receive the JCI certificate for medical service quality assessment, recognized in over 90 countries. Furthermore, it has a team of specialized secretaries supporting foreign languages such as English, French, Japanese, Korean, and so on for foreigners visiting.

The prices of Vimec Hospital’s services vary depending on the type of health check, but they typically range from 300.000 VND to 5.000.000 VND/time.

Address: 458 Minh Khai Street, Times City Urban Area, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi.

Viet Duc Hospital

Viet Duc Hospital – the cradle of Vietnam’s surgical industry, is the largest surgical center in the country, focuses on specialized techniques, promotes human organ transplant research and implementation. The facilities here are invested with various modern equipment. The team of doctors and nurses is highly responsible and has good professional qualifications.

However, one of the biggest disadvantages of this hospital is the waiting time for examinations is too long, especially at the Department of Medical Examination, which discourages their patients. The cost of medical examination fluctuates from 40,000 VND – 2.200.000 VND/ time.

Moreover, this hospital is one of the best hospitals in Hanoi that provides you the opportunity to do good deeds by donating an organ of your body to revive many others’ lives.

Have you heard of the “Giving is forever” movement? Indeed, it was initiated with an 8-year-old girl named Hai An, who was diagnosed with cancer but volunteered to donate her cornea when she died to help people find the light.

As a result, many people in Vietnam have been praising the little girl’s selfless acts and raising awareness about the meaning of this movement strongly in recent years. If you would like to do that, this hospital is where you can do it.

Address: No. 16 Phu Doan, Hang Bong Ward, Hoan Kiem district

Thu Cuc International General Hospital

When it comes to the best international hospitals in Hanoi, Thu Cuc International General Hospital is also a prestigious place that you can trust. This is a private hospital that belongs to Zinnia Corp, established in 2011. In a nice addition, it is always one of the top hospitals in Hanoi with the highest quality for medical examination and treatment assessed by the Hanoi Department of Health.

Moreover, this is also one of the famous cosmetic and surgery hospitals for women or anyone in need. However, the cost of health-check here is a bit higher than other hospitals in the region due to its good service from 500.000 VND-30.000.000 VND, and in my experience the price is totally worth what they bring.

Address: No.286 Thuy Khue, Tay Ho district

Hong Ngoc General Hospital

Doctors at Hong Ngoc General Hospital have extensive experience, having held key positions at many of Hanoi’s largest hospitals. Furthermore, this hospital has a dedicated and well-trained team of nurses, doctors, and receptionists.

Don’t worry too much about communicating with the doctor or the staff here because there are English interpreters who will support you during your medical examination. The price for a general check-up is about 2.990.000 VND/ time.

Address:

Facility 1: 55 Yen Ninh, Truc Bach Ward, Ba Dinh District
Facility 2: 8 Chau Van Liem, Phu Do Ward, Nam Tu Liem District

Top 8 Best Hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City For Expats In Vietnam

Hospital for Tropical Diseases

The hospital for tropical diseases will be the first to be listed. Its specialty is in the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The clinical and emergency resuscitation departments have contemporary technology and equipment to address the needs of infectious illness diagnosis, treatment, and emergency resuscitation.

Because it was established a long time ago, the facilities are somewhat old and limited. Still, the staff attitude is rated good, and the premises and toilets are cleaner than in some other hospitals. Therefore, if you have any problem related to infectious diseases like covid 19; you can choose treatment in the hospital for tropical diseases.

If you have demands on testing here, the price is from 50.000 VND to 2.000.000 VND/ time.

Address: No. 764 Vo Van Kiet, District 5

Hung Vuong Hospital

Hung Vuong is one of the leading prestigious medical treatment hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City. To have examination and treatment here will be a great choice due to its good service quality and affordable cost.

The obstetrics department attracts the most attention at this facility. Medical services provided aim at ensuring that both mother and baby have the best service with prices ranging from 80.000 VND to 5.000.000 VND/ time. Therefore, it is one of the hospitals taking responsibility for treating Covid 19 pregnant women and babies when the fourth wave of epidemics broke out in Ho Chi Minh city.

Address: No.128 Hồng Bàng, District 5

Vinmec International Hospital Saigon Central Park

Vinmec International Hospital Saigon is one of the third ones invested and developed by Vingroup – the largest corporation in Vietnam. When you take a health check here, you will be examined carefully and comprehensively by high-qualified doctors from locals and abroad.

Moreover, the modern technology application and professional quality here contribute to creating the famous name of Vinmec Hospital. Above all, this hospital has been developing to be the most prestigious medical examination and treatment place in Vietnam as well as the international level.

When it comes to the service prices of Vimec Hospital, it depends on the types of health-check, however, it tends to range from 300.000 VND to 23.000.000 VND/time.

If you have a generous budget, we kindly suggest this hospital due to its good service and well-invested facilities, which is proved by plenty of great feedback from its old as well as current customers.

Address: No. 208 Nguyen Huu Canh, Binh Thanh District

Cho Ray Hospital

Founded in 1900, Cho Ray is a prestigious and long-standing hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. After many historical periods, people have witnessed its significant change from appearance to name. On February 3, 2010, Cho Ray Hospital received a special rating by the state, which is an important milestone for the long-term efforts of the medical team here.

Their health check-up price is from 40.000VND to 5.000.000 VND/ time. Besides, they have some Ningen dock health checkup packages ranging from 18 million VND to 34 million. When using these packages, you will be served a special Bento lunch prepared by a restaurant from a five-star hotel.

The number of patients coming to the clinic on a daily basis is very large. So this hospital has started an online booking service, which is more convenient for people, especially in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic.

We highly recommend doing that because this helps save your time so much. You just need to make an online reservation through its website; then you can meet the doctor according to the time scheduled in advance at the hospital.

However, the areas which surround Cho Ray Hospital are prone to pickpocketing and theft. As a result, you should be cautious with personal items and bags when coming there.

Address: No.201B Nguyen Chi Thanh, District 5

Vietnam France Hospital – FV

FV is one of the leading hospitals in Vietnam, achieving international medical quality certification. Officially opened in March 2003, FV hospital currently has two campuses in District 7 and FV Saigon General Clinic in District 1.

FV Hospital is one of the top options for world-class healthcare services such as medical consultation, treatment, and care. This hospital not only serves the local people in and around Ho Chi Minh City, but it also services patients from neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.

So, its examination and treatment is somehow higher than that in other hospitals in the country with prices around 990.000 VND to 20.000.000 VND/time or even higher if you use many services.

If you are concerned about the language barriers here, do not be worried because you can totally discuss health-related problems with doctors here in English.
Address: No.06, Nguyen Luong Bang, Nam Sai Gon, District 7

Gia Dinh People’s Hospital

This is one of the general ones under the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City. With its highly qualified and experienced medical doctors, the hospital has enough major specialties. It is fully equipped with modern medical equipment to improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.

In addition to medical examination and treatment, it also trains students from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. The hospital receives about 1,500 students to intern in the undergraduate and graduate systems every year on average.

If you are wondering about how much it costs, the official price list has been announced to range from 39.000 VND to 21.200.000 VND/time, depending on the service you’d like to use.

Although Gia Dinh People’s is not as good as hospitals mentioned above, especially facilities that are a bit downgraded, it can be a good option for you with a tight budget.

Address: No. 1 No Trang Long Street, Ward 7, Binh Thanh District

People’s 115 Hospital

People’s 115 Hospital is the next location in the top 8 best ones we will mention. With the norm of 1,600 beds, 1,700 employees, it receives and treats an average of 2,000 outpatients and 1,900 inpatients every day.

The hospital builds clinics on demand to meet the medical examination and treatment citizens’ demands, reduce the overload for the examining area, and contribute to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment for the people.

Checking cost can be up to approximately 10.000.000 VND/time. Nonetheless, actual costs may vary on a case-by-case basis due to differences in drug requirements, specialist services, and services incurred by prescription or by request.

However, if you cannot speak Vietnamese fluently, it can be a major challenge for you in discussing with doctors or staff here because some complaints about the staff not being able to communicate in English have been recorded about this hospital.

Please notice that you should refer to some advice about the parking area because you can find it difficult to find somewhere to park there.

Address: No.527, Su Van Hanh, District 10

Tu Du Hospital

Tu Du is the leading hospital in South Vietnam for obstetrics, gynecology, and infertility care. Thousands of patients and pregnant women from the regions visit the hospital every day for a gynecological exam, particularly for infertility treatment.

As to the check-up price, it can be from 38.700 VND to roughly 8.000.000 VND for one time using a service such as examination or testing altogether.

The hospital is gradually developing to become a specialized center for pregnant women and newborns of the country. However, due to many patients simultaneously, there are not enough beds for them, which leads to their depression when using check-ups here.

Are you an expat living and teaching English in Vietnam? If yes, this article is made just for you! Scroll down and read to know about health insurance in Vietnam and what health package is the best for you.

Vietnam is a popular destination for immigrants, expats and digital nomads. The cost of living is low and finding a job is relatively easy. Vietnam was proved to be one of the fastest growing economies in the world with an estimated GDP growth rate of 6.7% (in 2015). However, the standard for heathcare in Vietnam still needs lots of improvement.

While the country is currently working towards universal health coverage, standards in public facilities still remain low. However, there are encouraging signs of improvement. According to the  WHO (World Health Organization), more than 97% of Vietnamese children receive standard vaccinations, one of the highest rates in the world.

For prospective expats considering relocation, here’s what you need to know about health insurance in Vietnam for foreigners and expats.

An overview of health insurance in Vietnam

The heathcare system in Vietnam has gone through a thorough transformation since the year 2014. Thanks to the fact that Vietnamese authorities has been pushing for universal healthcare, and consequently over 80% of residents in Vietnam have now been able to enjoy healthcare.

Nowadays, the healthcare service is available in both public and private facilities. Public centers are the most common, and that they mainly focus on 4 distinct ranges of service: central, provincial, district, and commune.

Each of these levels has a two-pronged system that specialize in prevention – much like the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) like that in the US – and medical acute care (short- term treatment for a serious injury or episode of illness).

Although previously reliant entirely on tax, this system now has 3 types of funding. These are:

  • Government revenue – This typically comes from infrastructure improvement and recurrent spending (in particular on the provincial degree)
  • Social medical insurance contributions
  • Out-of-pocket payments

Below is things that you will be covered for by the VHS (Vietnam’s public healthcare system)

To ensure more people have access to this care, there are two types of health care in Vietnam, both administered by the Vietnamese Social Security (VSS):

  • Compulsory Social Security Coverage: This applies to all permanent employees. Contracts longer than three months plus several other categories including children under six, financially unstable individuals, students, over 90s and war veterans.
  • Voluntary health insurance: This applies to all people who are not covered by the compulsory scheme
    , such as self-employed and informal workers. The contribution rates for compulsory health insurance are 4.5% of income, with the employer paying 3% and 1.5% will be paid by the employee.

Types of Health Insurance in Vietnam

Private health insurance in Vietnam

There are many insurers offering full-service private health insurance. More international providers are entering the country every year, mostly through a partnership with a general insurer. Other providers are changing their focus to Southeast Asia, although they may not have physical offices here. Local suppliers focus their efforts on Vietnamese citizens, although their products are often available to expats as well.

We think of private insurers in these three broad categories: Local Focus Southeast, Asia Regional Focus and International Focus.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance offers limited benefits for relatively short periods of time, but offers a wide range of coverage. The benefits offered are much less robust than health insurance:

  • Low annual benefit limits, many exclusions
  • No coverage for pre-existing condition, mandatory deductibles, no direct billing.

But for healthy people with a high risk tolerance, vacation travel insurance can be a good option, providing access to basic medical care so travelers can continue their trip or return home.

Life insurance combined with health insurance

You can also obtain health insurance in Vietnam through a life insurance company. These are mainly international life insurance brands that have established a branch in Vietnam to offer packages of life investment and life insurance. Health insurance is often available as an add-on product. But you can’t buy a separate health insurance plan from a life insurance company, so that’s not an option unless you’re looking for a
suite of products.

This is a popular option for local Vietnamese citizens looking for a one-stop all-in-one solution. Life insurance companies in Vietnam include: AIA, Manulife, Generali, Prudential, Chubb, Daiichi, etc.

Do you need an insurance in Vietnam?

In total, 87.7% of Vietnam’s population (83.6 million citizens) are being able to enjoy health insurance.

To enjoy Vietnamese heathcare facilities, all expats have to contribute to the compulsory health insurance attempt. However, you’ll realize that compulsory health insurance doesn’t offer you with enough cover, therefore you may be tempted to require out some private health insurance too.

Overall, 7% of the Vietnamese population invests in camera medical insurance.

If you’d wish to decide what proportion medical insurance will cost you and your family, please check out our list of suggested healthcare providers. From there, you’ll be able to request free quotes from whichever company suits your needs

In order to get a work visa everyone needs to have a health check. Unlike some other parts of the world where the health check is simply a quick check to make sure you can walk, talk, and have no obvious difficulties, the health check in Vietnam is quite intensive.

Having health check in Vietnam

Having health check in Vietnam

It is important to note that there are only a limited number of hospitals and clinics that carry out the health check. If you do not use the allocated places then your health check will not be allowed.

Within Hanoi, the following offer the health check:

  • Bach Mai Hospital.
  • E Hospital;
  • Vietlife Clinic;
  • Duc Giang General Hospital;
  • Dong Da General Hospital;
  • L’Hôpital Français de Hanoi;
  • Thu Cuc International General Hospital;
  • St Paul General Hospital;
  • Trang An General Hospital;
  • Hanoi  General Hospital;
  • Hoe Nhai General Hospital;
  • Hong Ngoc  General Hospital;
  • Dr. Binh TeleClinic;

In Ho Chi Minh City, the following clinics and hospitals offer the health check facility:

  • Saigon General Hospital;
  • Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital;
  • 115 People’s Hospital;
  • Raffles Medical General Clinic;
  • Trung Vuong Hospital;
  • Gia Dinh People’s Hospital;
  • Hospital of Thu Duc district;
  • Xuyen A General Hospital;
  • Hospital of Binh Thanh District;
  • Van Hanh General Hospital;
  • Hong Duc III Hospital;
  • CITY International Hospital
  • Tan Hung General Hospital;
  • Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital;
  • General Clinic under Van Hai General Clinic Company Limited;
  • FV Hospital;
  • General Clinic under Y Khoa Hoang Khang Company Limited;
  • An Sinh General Hospital;
  • Hoan My Sai Gon Hospital;
  • Saigon Columbia Asia International Clinic;
  • General Clinic under the Viet Gia Health Care Joint Stock Company;
  • General Clinic under Vigor Anbis Japan Joint Stock Company;
  • General Clinic under Careplus International Clinics;
  • General Clinic under Dai Phuoc Health Company Limited;
  • Nhan Hau International Clinics;
  • General Clinic (Clinic No. 2) under HCM City Family Medical Practice Company Limited

If you are located in a smaller town then you will find that there is at least one clinic or hospital – your work place will be able to inform you of the location.

Note that the health check does not have a standard price. As a result, it is important to check out the various clinics to find one that suits your budget.

When going to get your health check it is important to take you passport (as a means of identification) as well as photographs. Two photos are needed of the larger size (4 cm by 6 cm) and a white background is required. It is important to note that the photograph is recent (within the past six months).  As you will be rolling up your sleeve/ taking your top on and off (for ECG / chest x-ray) etc. then it is suggested that you wear loose clothing.

Upon arrival at the clinic, you will be given a basic form for details. All of this is standard information ( e.g. age / address / gender etc. as well as information about medical history ( both yours and your family ) This includes questions on infectious diseases,  heart problems, asthmas, cancer, epilepsy, TB or mental disorders.

You will then be given a large envelope that contains your health check form and directed off to the first room. As already mentioned, the health check is rather intense and you need to allow at least two hours for the whole process.

To summarise, you move from room to room to carry out the various tests. This is then signed off on your large envelope and health check form.

There are various rooms to visit as follows:

  • Basic physical examination – similar to the complete health check in some other countries – blood pressure and a height and weight check  ( for your BMI )
  • Blood test – a large range of aspects are checked from testing for anaemia to liver function. As a result it is recommended that you don’t drink alcohol for 24 hours prior to the test
  • Urine test
  • ECG – this is a heart test and is a unique part of the health check in Vietnam. You simply lie down ( topless ) and small suctions are placed on your heart area, wrists and ankles
  • Ultrasound
  • Chest x-ray – the main reason for this is to check for TB ( tuberculous )
  • Teeth  – the dentist simply checks for huge problems, not a simple cavity
  • ENT – your ears, nose and throat are all checked
  • Eyes  – a standard eyesight ( both long and short sighted )
No conversation is needed when having a checkup

No conversation is needed when having a checkup

Don’t worry if you go to the health check alone, there is no need for conversations – you simply move from room and room and are directed where to go to next.

At the end of going round from room to room, all of the results are given over to the doctor who will give you the final all clear.

Depending on the clinic you visit, they will either send the whole pack of results over to your school / centre or will give you the pack to submit to HR

Although time consuming, the health check is relatively straightforward and it is always useful to get everything checked out. Make sure that you arrive early (as many clinics stop for the lunchtime session meaning that if not completed you can end up spending most of the day there) and be open to the experience – it is a necessary part of the work permit process and if nothing else, makes for a great story later on!
