When you have lived in Vietnam for even a short while you may become curious about why there are so many people in logos jackets on motorbikes with huge boxes on the back- or you may have seen a large crowd of people outside an office building surrounding a man who appears to be like Father Christmas giving out gifts! 

The answer is simple – people are simply online shopping. Although in the West there is online shopping, it is not necessarily the first port of call when you want to purchase something. However, in Vietnam, online shopping is the first place that you look when you want something and really, only if it is not available online then you will go somewhere and buy it in person. 

The system is extremely simple (as long as you know what you are doing) and this article will help guide you through the process. 

Making an account 

The important thing is that you must have an account to be able to order – you cannot simply choose something and make a one off purchase. To make an account only takes a couple of minutes, however, it is very important to note that you must have a Vietnamese phone number. This is simply because when they come to deliver the item they phone you so that you are able to go to your gate/meet at an assigned spot. 

When you sign up for the account they will send an SMS message to your phone to check that it is correct so do make sure you put the correct information or your account will not be validated. 

When signing up for an account you need to put your delivery address – so make sure that you not only know the street name but all of the other information – i.e. your ward and district. If you are not sure then simply look it up on Google Maps. 

Please note that you can have more than one delivery address – this is useful if you want things delivered elsewhere.

Options 

Once you have an account then you can start shopping – Lazada and Shopee are pretty similar – however, there are times when something is cheaper on one site than the others – so it is worth checking out both sites. 

A lot of the goods come from China – this means that it can take a couple of weeks to arrive – so if you want your item quickly there are options at the side to regulate your results and you can look for things from the town/city you are in – from Vietnam in general or include overseas. 

If you order things from Vietnam the delivery can be amazingly quick and can be the next day or a couple of days at most. 

It can sometimes be difficult to find the thing that you want ( as the sites are in Vietnamese and you are translating ) – so if this happens then it is suggested that you search for that item on Google and it will pop up at the top along with the price and you can press that link which will help you to get into the correct category. Once you are in the correct area then it is easy to navigate and refine your search with price etc. 

Offers 

When you find what you want to buy there are two options – buy now – or add to the cart. 

Things added to the cart stay there permanently so it is fine to add things that you think are nice but you aren’t too sure about. 

When making your order there are often buttons for each of the individual shops which offer an immediate discount – these are usually only 2 or 5,000 VND discounts – but every little bit helps! 

When you are ready to make your order, before you press to pay it is important to check out the vouchers section. This can be found at the top of the page – simply press and you will be directed to another page with the discounts.

The discounts may be a percentage off the total bill if a certain has been reached or a discount on the delivery charge. Each of the discounts has a date ( they usually last about a week ) and are renewed daily ( so you can use the voucher today and then you can use the same voucher again tomorrow )

Payment options 

Although there is also Zalo etc the two main methods that foreigners will use are card or cash. If you want to pay by card then you put your details in and the amount is automatically deducted. 

The advantage of using the card is that if you are not available to collect the parcel then as the amount has already been paid there is a chance that they may be able to leave it with someone else. 

It is important to note that Lazada or Shopee do not provide the red tax receipt –  this means that although the items are significantly cheaper than the market price you are unable to use Lazada or Shopee for items that you want to be reimbursed for from school. 

Delivery 

Once you have made your order the acknowledgement will come up on your email. After that, you will have updates of the progress – and on the day that you will be receiving your parcel you get an email so that you can be prepared for collection. 

Unfortunately, there are no set times that you can receive your parcel, so they can arrive any time during the day ( although delivery will be within working hours ) 

Some apartment buildings will allow the receptionist or security guard to collect parcels on your behalf( if the bill has already been paid )  although others do not allow this as they do not want to be held responsible. 

When you do collect the parcel you will find that the delivery person takes a photo of the delivery – they do not point the phone at your face more at your hand – so you may think that they are doing some secret dodgy thing – however this is just confirmation of delivery and there is nothing in it. 

You will often see online shoppers waiting for customers to pick up from the side of the road 

Returning a package 

Sometimes you will receive something that is not correct in some way e.g. too small. When making an order make sure of the returns policy as there are some places that will not allow you to return. 

If you have something which can be returned then the procedure is very straightforward. You simply package it back up – if you have not ripped the label with the code then that is enough – if you have destroyed the label then you need to print out another and stick it on. 

You complete the online form about the reason why you are returning and then choose an option of how you will send it back. You simply then wait for them to phone you to say that someone is there to collect the parcel and you go and give it to them. There is no charge for the return and the money will be refunded.

Vietnam has an enormous wealth of museums – from tiny obscure topics to huge multistory places. There are indeed many to choose from and you will find museums even in the smallest of towns – so learn more about where to find the museums – what they cater for and most importantly – when they are open! 

Museum costs 

The best thing about museums in Vietnam is that a vast majority of them are completely free! In general, if the museum is related to war or military themes you will find that you can enter at no cost. There are a significant number of military museums in Vietnam and although you may initially think that this is not an aspect that you are particularly interested in, it is worth trying them out ( remember they are free ! ) as you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that there is a lot more to them than simply a collection of guns and tanks! 

For those not related to the military there is typically an entrance fee. You will find a payment area at the entrance to the museum – this may be a booth outside or a small table as you enter. There are always tickets ( so make sure that you do not pay some random person and get nothing in return to prove you have paid ) – these tickets are almost always large decorated tickets ( usually with pictures of the building or key artefacts) which are very nice souvenirs for your scrap book!

After purchasing your ticket there is no need to show it to anyone else in the museum – there is instead the assumption that if you have got through the door that you have paid. For some museums when you pay, you will receive a small tri fold brochure which tells you the main areas of the museum. In the larger museums, it is typical for these to be available in various languages ( including English ) 

The typical price for the museum ( 2023 prices ) is 40,000 VND – although this can vary from 20,000 VND to 30,000 VND as well –  which is a very reasonable price. At some museums, there are child rates – which are usually half the adult price – although at some places, there is only one standard entrance fee. 

The main exception to this price point is found in the old city of Hue – where prices are higher as it is much more of a tourist destination. Prices for the entrance to the Citadel start at a much more expensive 200,000 VND – which although expensive in comparison to the usual museums is in fact still a very reasonable entrance fee! 

Museum opening times 

One of the biggest problems with museums in Vietnam are the opening times. Some of the museums open all day i.e. 8 am opening time with a 5 pm closing time which is fine. However, a very large number of museums have a very long lunchtime during which time they are firmly closed. This is not related to whether they are free or paid museums but instead seems to be related to the museum’s preference. 

Typically the long lunch starts at 11 am or 11.30 am and then continues until 1 pm or 1.30 pm. Although this is clearly stated in the website/information of some of the museums, for some they advertise the whole day and forget to mention the long lunchtime! This means that you do need to plan your times as it is irritating to get all the way to the museum, pay your entrance fee and then find after thirty minutes of browsing that they are closing for lunch!

Museum contents 

In general, museums in Vietnam are very good – they are well organised and have a lot of information. Usually, there is an English translation ( even if sometimes the translation reads a little oddly ! ) so you are able to know what you are looking at. 

Unlike museums in the West which often have a section for the young children to make the experience more interactive or even a separate children’s area, the museums in Vietnam are quite old fashioned and usually consist of lots of artefacts in glass cases with a long and detailed information board next to it.

However, a favourite part of a museum in Vietnam are the recreated areas – these consist of life sized wax statues in various scenarios e.g.in battle scenes / in tribal scenarios etc. These give you a snapshot of life in Vietnam and make for great selfie photographs ( as well as being educationally beneficial as you get an in depth insight).

Photographs/videos

In museums in Vietnam, there are no additional fees for the use of photographs or videos so you can take as much footage as you would like. 

In a few of the museums, there will be a small shop at the end of the exhibits where you can buy postcards which feature some of the main artefacts, although this is not typical and only really applies to the largest museums in Vietnam. 

Toilets / Cafes in the museums 

All museums have toilets -often with toilets on each floor. These are almost always of high quality, with toilet paper provided and clean and neat. 

Some of the larger museums have an onsite café – either located within the museum itself or in the grounds ( as many of the museums have an outdoor area as well as an indoor section ) This is useful as after a few hours of browsing in the museum you may feel like a rest and time to plan where you are off to next! Prices in the museum cafes are directly comparable to cafes in the city/town so are an easy option.

Overall, Vietnam has an amazing number of museums – so whether you are naturally a museum type of person or simply would like to browse, take the time to look up the wide variety of museums on offer and enjoy learning about the fascinating country of Vietnam.

With there being a steady influx and outgoing of teachers in Vietnam, there is inevitably a lot of movement between schools for teachers – which means the need to apply, interview and get a job. This article will guide you as to some ways to navigate the complexities of the process and stand out in the crowd, making your application and future success more likely to be achieved. 

Your CV 

CVs have come a long way from the days of the basic list of qualifications and previous employment history and they are the first impression that your future employee will have of you. As a result, it is essential that yours stands out.

Although it does cost more, it is highly suggested that you print your CV In colour – this makes it so much more attractive and in Vietnam people are very attuned to aesthetics ( think of all those wonderful selfie settings dotted around ) It is essential that you include a photograph – although this can be a contentious issue you have to face the fact that in Vietnam the look of the teacher is a vital aspect. There is a need for a teacher to look smart and friendly and so if your CV does not include a photograph then there is a high chance that your potential employee will not take your application any further. 

Although it is super obvious but it really is vital that your CV has no spelling or grammar mistakes – you will be shocked by the number of CV’s I have seen with simple mistakes. Although you can use your computer’s own spell check, these can sometimes miss things ( especially grammar mistakes ) so it is suggested that you install a free programme – something like Grammarly – which will highlight all of the mistakes and enable you to find out more about the grammar points to make an informed decision.

The interview 

Interviews in Vietnam tend to be pretty basic  ( when compared to some interviews in the West where there can be a panel / random questions to test your creativity and flexibility e.g. if you were a piece of furniture what would be etc ) Questions will be related to your experience and teaching knowledge – usually with an emphasis upon classroom management techniques ( as some classes in Vietnam can be very large ) 

A great emphasis will be put on your qualifications – where they were obtained and what exactly the course entailed – so if it is a while since you qualified it may be worth revising exactly what your course involved! This is due to the fact that qualification certificates can easily be purchased in Asia so it is very important for them to check that you are in fact legitimate! 

One very popular part of an interview is a demonstration lesson – the organisation may have asked you previously to send in a video of you teaching or they may ask you to go to the class and carry out a lesson. It is important to be prepared for this and have a variety of easy to teach fun activities which can be adapted to all circumstances! 

In a demonstration lesson, they are looking at your confidence in the classroom – making sure that you are in control and have a plan to move a lesson forwards. In addition, they are making sure that your voice is clear enough – that you are loud enough for all to hear and have a good understanding of the subject.

References 

You will find that all schools need references and will not move forward in any way without having a full set. This can lead to a lot of delays so it is important for you to tell your references that you are applying for jobs so that they are able to respond in a timely manner. 

Most of the schools you apply to will have their own reference form – so if you are applying for a variety of schools and they are all asking for references it can be overwhelming for your referee – so it may be best to let your referee know which ones you are most interested in so that they can complete those ones first. 

Follow up 

Vietnam is not a country which is known for planning ahead and working quickly so be patient with the amount of time that it takes for a school to follow up after an interview. It is suggested that you write a thank you email immediately after the interview – reiterating how you enjoyed the interview, thought the school had a lovely environment / enthusiastic staff etc and how you can see yourself as a perfect fit. 

It is fine to follow up with the school to see the process if you don’t hear from them after your references have been contacted ( remembering that nothing will happen until the school has completed references ) 

The contract 

The contracts in Vietnam are typically excessively long and tedious so don’t be shocked to receive a 10 page contract! Take your time to read it through and ask questions about any parts you are unsure about as there is usually a lot of legal jargon. 

You will be required to sign each and every page and then sign the end section as well as print your full name and date the document. 

In addition to your contract, you will also be given a labour contract – this is a government requirement and ensures that you are following the rules and regulations of the country. There is a lot less flexibility with queries with this document as it is a standard document however do feel free to ask if there is anything that you don’t understand. As with the contract, each page needs to be signed. 

Overall, getting a job in Vietnam is relatively easy – you simply need to make sure that you do your preparations, ensure that you are dressed smartly and act confidently when at your new prospective place of work and that you appear positive and enthusiastic! – best of luck!

Toilets – we all need them – however, often this is something you don’t think too deeply about until you suddenly find yourself with a toilet type you don’t recognize or are in need of one and not sure where to look! This article will help navigate you through the maze of toilets in Vietnam.

How bad are the toilets in Vietnam? 

This really depends on your perspective – if you are accustomed to only Western toilets which always flush, are the sit-down type, have toilet paper, and are cleaned every hour then you will probably be disappointed by the toilet standard in Vietnam. 

However, if you have experienced squat toilets which are almost totally blocked, rarely flush and you have to cover your nose to even get anywhere near then you will be pleasantly surprised! 

What type of toilets do they have in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, there are two main types of toilets – the Western and the Turkish ( squat ) 

The Western toilet 

The good news is that in most cities/towns you will find that the majority of hotel rooms will have a Western toilet. This will be the type of toilet that you are probably used to i.e., that you simply sit down on it to use. This toilet is self flushing – you push the button or push the lever, and everything disappears easily. 

The Korean toilet

In some places, you will find an even more upmarket toilet – the Korean toilet! These are usually found in very posh places – such as hotels or upmarket shopping malls etc. The Korean toilet comes with a whole page of instructions as it is extremely fancy – having features from a warm toilet seat (which sounds really odd but once experienced you will love it! ) to water sprays ( both front and back  with varying temperatures and intensity of spray ) to hot air blowers ( again with varying intensities )

The Turkish (squat toilet) 

Depending if you are in the town/city or in the country, this toilet basically consists of a hole with a kind of stand on which you place your feet. In the towns, this base will be ceramic and you cannot see down the hole, however, if you are in the country then the base for your feet may just be planks of wood and you can see straight down the hole to the pit ( or river ) 

To use it, you simply position your feet (facing away from the flushing system ( if there is one ) and bend right down. Although in the beginning, you may feel very uncomfortable doing this as your leg muscles may not be accustomed to it, in fact, this is a position which is very conducive to using a toilet as it lets things flow out naturally!

It is important to note that you do have to be more aware of your clothes with a squat toilet if you are not used to them  – you need to pull your trousers down a lot further than you would with a Western toilet  ( to avoid accidentally peeing on them ) so if you are really struggling you may like to simply remove your trousers altogether ( especially as the area around the toilet is often wet due to the flush ) 

If the toilet has a flush system, then do make sure that you are not too close as the water does have a tendency to rush out and often overlaps with the place where you put your feet, etc.

In most of the toilets in Vietnam you will see a sign that tells you not to put the toilet paper down the toilet but instead to put it in the dustbin next to you. For people who are used to wiping and flushing this may seem a horrible thing to do however Vietnamese toilets cannot cope with toilet paper and as a result, if you put the toilet paper down then there is a good chance you will block the system. 

The little dustbins (which are right next to the toilet ) are usually a swing bin ( so you can’t see everyone else’s used toilet paper ) and are easy to use. 

In the towns/cities then you will find toilet paper provided in most toilets, however, out of town you may like to take your own. In some of the larger toilets (e.g. at a bus stop off station etc then rather than stocking each toilet stall with toilet paper there will be a giant communal roll so you take your supply from there if you are going to need it before you go into the toilet stall! )Toilet paper is very easy and economical to buy in Vietnam and can be found in most small shops/supermarkets. 

Public Toilets in Vietnam 

In the towns/cities there are quite a few public toilets – some of these are free and others you have to pay the person who is sitting at the entrance (the cost of which is minimal ) and they will provide you with a few pieces of toilet paper to use. The standard is not too bad – there is usually an odor but they are bearable and hit the standards of basic hygiene at the bare minimum. 

If you are looking for a higher class of toilet then you are better off looking for toilets within an establishment. The easiest of these are shopping malls or department stalls – where you will find toilets on various floors – all with Western toilets, hand soap, mirrors and dryers. 

If you are not near a mall then Circle K ( the popular convenience store – like 7 – eleven ( which also has free toilets ) is probably the next easiest. These are typically not the most luxurious of toilets but at a minimum will flush and you will be able to wash your hands.

If you are unable to find a mall or a convenience store, then you can try a fast food outlet – e.g. Mc Donald’s / KFC / Lotteria, etc which have reliably clean flushing toilets. 

Failing that, a coffee shop is your next option– many of the coffee shops don’t really like anyone coming in just to use the toilet, so it is better to try larger coffee shops as you will then be less noticeable! 

Overall, toilets in Vietnam are not too bad as a general rule – just don’t have Western standards (especially when out of towns/cities) and be ready for flexibility – hope for the best but be prepared for the worst!
