As with all trips, it is important to initially prepare. You will find that your school will have a risk assessment form to fill in.  This is usually quite a long and detailed document which outlines the possible hazards that may be produced through the trip and ways that you can counteract these as much as possible. 

However, you may be surprised to find that typically teachers simply copy a previous risk assessment form rather than actually going to the site to check to see if anything has changed between the previous visit and this one. You then have a choice of simply agreeing that there is not much chance of some major changes at the location between the previous visit and now, or you can take it upon yourself to go along and make your own risk assessment. 

If you do decide to go along and make your own risk assessment, be sure to take your work ID so that you can prove the reason behind your visit. The place that you visit will be used to people coming and taking a look to see if it is suitable and thus will let you in for free so that you can have a good look. 

When looking for your risk assessment be sure to look out for sharp edges from which children could injure themselves and also look for potential dangers e.g. water that they could fall in / things that they could climb up and propel themselves off from! Don’t forget to also have a look at the toilets – make sure that there are enough toilets and that they are clean enough ( it may be a good idea to flush a toilet to check and turn on a tap to check for a good supply of water ) Check that there is toilet paper available ( as if not, you can make sure that you bring more with you ! ) 

What to take with you 

Your school may have a first aid bag that you can take with you. Do make sure that you check the contents of the bag instead of simply assuming that it will have all the things that you need. Typically you will need plasters / eye drops ( or eye wash )  / paracetamol/ tissues / bandage / cleaning alcohol and cotton wool – don’t forget plastic gloves for the person administering the possible first aid!

Make sure that you have all the phone numbers of people at the school in case of emergencies and that you have credit on your phone so you can make a call if needed. 

Take money with you (just in case ) – this is to ensure that you have money for an emergency taxi to the clinic if suddenly needed or alternatively if you get there and find that they charge a different price to the agreed one and more admission money is needed.

Make sure that you have a class list and are aware of the number of children that you are taking with you. Make sure that you count the children very frequently – it is much easier to lose a child than you realise!

Ideally, each child should have a badge which details which school they are from and the contact numbers so if a child does wander off alone and is found then the school can be contacted. 

When going on a trip you may be surprised to find that the children are typically squashed into a bus with two to a seat. Do make sure that you put the seat belts on the children ( as much as possible ) and rearrange the adults if needs be so that no children are in the front seat. The front seat really is dangerous for children so do be sure to stress this when getting on the bus.

Although you may have assumed that the main purpose of the trip was to educate the children in a new environment, you will be surprised that your Vietnamese colleagues instead seem to focus on the number of photographs that they can take of the trip. 

Although this may seem irrelevant to ex-pats, in Vietnamese culture it is important to have a wonderful set of photographs of the children on the trip. This will be expected by the parents and the school and will be used in newsletters/brochures etc – so rather than becoming irritated with it, it is advised that you simply join in with your broad ex-pat smile and allow the photos to be staged and taken. 

Allocate a lot of time for photo taking whilst on the trip! 

However, it is fine to make sure that there is time for educational aspects as well. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to suggest that a certain amount of time is taken for the photo taking and then a certain amount of time when it is educational ( although one person can still continue to take the photographs ) 

You will probably finish the trip feeling that it was a photo shoot rather than an educational visit, however, it is important to simply note that this is the way it is in Vietnam and it won’t change overnight!  

Overall, when faced with organising and going on an educational trip, it is important to be flexible – not to have your Western expectations and assumptions leading your emotions. Instead, simply enjoy it as an experience and yet another wonderful Vietnamese story that you will be telling friends and family in the future!

The plan proposed by the authorities is to make a speed reducer on the road surface to warn vehicles to slow down before going downhill and to tarp the roof and build a refuge road for vehicles to enter when they encounter a sudden brake failure.

This pass was famous during the Dien Bien Phu campaign because it suffered thousands of tons of bombs and still survived. The name Pha Din pass comes from the Thai ethnic language “Pha Din”, in which Pha means heaven, Din means earth, implying here is the confluence between heaven and earth.

Looking down from the top of the pass, Pha Din has a very dangerous and precarious terrain, a thin road crisscrossing between a cliff on one side and a deep abyss on the other. The slope of the pass is about 10%, in some places 12% to 15%, even there are local uphill bends of 19%.

This is one of the most challenging passes in Vietnam. When going uphill and downhill, the long zigzag road with 8 extremely dangerous races, the radius of the curve is less than 15m and besides, there are countless sleeve bends, A and Z turns in which there are many curves. Many sections are just enough for one car to pass. A dangerous factor of Pha Din is that it is located on red soil mountains, not limestone mountains like other famous roads, so the ground is relatively weak, prone to landslides in the rainy season.

In 2005, the government decided to invest in upgrading the National Highway 6 in the Northwest. In which, the section Son La – Tuan Giao was built from 2006 to 2009 and completed, dividing Pha Din pass into two old and new routes on the fork of the pass. The old Pha Din pass is 32km long (from km 360 to km 392 located on the old national highway 6), has the highest point of 1648 m above sea level and about 125 famous dangerous bends, narrow roads, many sections are just enough. let a car pass. The new Pha Din Pass was built along the mountainside to the left of the old National Highway 6, the length is reduced to 26km with about 60 bends, some bends are up to 60m wide, the slope is reduced to 8%, especially the road surface is 2 times wider than before.

Since the new Pha Din pass route has been put into use, it has made traffic safer, while the old Pha Din pass is only suitable for locals or adventurous tourists to like to conquer famous passes in Vietnam.

O Quy Ho Pass (Lai Chau)

O Quy Ho Pass has a long zigzag road on Highway 4B. Of which, 2/3 of the distance is in Tam Duong and Lai Chau districts, the remaining 1/3 is in Sa Pa and Lao Cai. This is probably one of the passes in Vietnam that holds the record for length with a length of up to nearly 50km. The top of O Quy Ho pass in the middle of the mountains is also known as the Heaven Gate.

When winter comes, the top of O Quy Ho pass can be covered with snow and ice. O Quy Ho Pass is also known as Hoang Lien Son Pass or May Pass, crossing the Hoang Lien Son range.

This pass route is now well upgraded, becoming a more frequent traffic route. However, with one side being a deep abyss and the other side being a steep cliff, the pass is winding and winding, up and down continuously according to the concordance of the mountain range, this famous pass will make the pass bikers have tough moments. It only takes a second of carelessness and both people and vehicles will plunge into the abyss below.

To ensure safety, it is best to go by motorbike or car during the day, do not go at night when visibility is limited, and always keep a moderate speed to handle all possible accidents from happening.

Khau Pha Pass is located on Highway 32, with the starting point being the section of Highway 32 with National Highway 279 with a length of over 30km. It belongs to the bordering area between Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai districts, Yen Bai province and passes through many other famous landmarks such as: La Pan Tan, Tu Le, Che Nha, Nam Co… When traveling from the city Yen Bai reverse along Highway 32 for about 5 hours through Tu Le commune, Khau Pha pass, Mu Cang Chai district, you will see a plateau surrounded by mountains.

Because it is located at an altitude of more than 1200m above sea level, the temperature is quite low, so the top of Khau Pha pass is often cloudy. The pass road is dangerous, winding, crisscrossing mountains.

Khau Pha Pass is one of the most winding and steep passes in Vietnam, crossing the top of Khau Pha mountain, the highest mountain in the Mu Cang Chai region.

During the length of the pass, there are dozens of bends. On cloudy days, Khau Pha Pass becomes extremely dangerous for drivers because visibility is limited. Add to that the danger lurking from the rocks from the high mountains that can fall in bad weather conditions.

Ma Phuc Pass (Cao Bang)

Visitors to Cao Bang, if they want to visit Ban Gioc waterfall, Nguom Ngao cave (Chong Khanh district) or visit Ta Lung international border gate (Phuc Hoa district), visit the prosperous town of Quang Uyen (Quang Uyen district). .. must go through Ma Phuc Pass.

The pass is about 20km east of Cao Bang city, in the territory of Quoc Toan commune, Tra Linh district. Although the pass is quite dangerous, there are many beautiful scenes. Ma Phuc Pass is about 3.5km long; about 700m above sea level. It meanders along the limestone mountainside.

From the foot of the pass to the top of the pass, there are 7 steep slopes. On one side of the pass is a towering cliff, on the other is a deep abyss with narrow ravines. Ma Phuc Pass is a unique road, the gateway to the eastern districts of Cao Bang province.

Although Ma Phuc Pass is not as dangerous as other passes in Vietnam, it also makes people who are not familiar with this road also afraid in the first time passing.

Thung Khe Pass (Hoa Binh)

Thung Khe Pass belongs to Highway 6, Hoa Binh province, located between Tan Lac and Mai Chau. Reach the middle of Thung Khe pass at an altitude of 1000m above sea level. There are several rows of thatched-roof shops here, which are tables assembled from rough trees on the side of the road. They sell sugar cane, rice lam, rock moss, forest vegetables. You can stop to enjoy boiled corn, boiled sugarcane, eat extremely attractive rice with sesame.

The pass is not as majestic or steep as other passes in Vietnam, but Thung Khe contains countless unexpected dangers for any rider.

Thung Khe Pass does not have the bends of the sleeve like the pass roads in Ha Giang or Lai Chau, Dien Bien, but it is dangerous because of the dense fog every afternoon, whether it is winter or summer. As a result, it is very important to work out the basics of Ha Long before you get there to make sure that you are well aware of the basic set-up so that you are able to take full advantage of all the wonderful things that Ha Long has to offer! 

Visiting Halong: how to get around the bridge?

The most important thing to note about Ha Long is the fact that in many respects Ha Long consists of two towns which are connected by a huge bridge! 

It is very important to note that the bridge is not able to be crossed over by pedestrians – not only because there is no walkway of any kind on the bridge itself, but also due to the fact that you would need to walk a twisting mile or so up a large hill to get to the start of the bridge!

Although it is possible to get a Grab bike to take you from one side to the other, Grab bikes in Ha Long are few and far between and you really do have to be lucky to get one! Grab cars are easy to get, however – but as the price of the car is inevitably at least twice the price of a motorbike, it can be an expensive process travelling from one side of the bridge to the other!

The government area

To summarise, one side is more of a government area. It has more shops and buildings and houses the town’s museum. This is the side over the bridge when you are entering from the Hanoi direction. 

The other side has the beaches and the entrance to the large amusement park – Sun World as well as a small town. When visiting Halong, this is the side that you will encounter if coming on the highway from the Hanoi direction. 

The beach side 

Ha Long beaches are located on the one side – and consist of sandy beaches with shady palm trees as well as cafes and bars etc.

Please note that when booking a hotel, although you would like to be close to the beach, it is important to look closely at the buildings along the beach as some of the beach bars and cafes can be very loud late into the night. It may instead be preferable to book a hotel which is set back a little further so that you manage to get some sleep in! 

Hotels in Halong

Some hotels on the beach side are located in rather remote areas – there are quite a few “ new builds “ which consist of identical houses all in long rows. Although the hotels themselves are very nice inside, as the buildings are all identical, then the area can be rather “ soulless “ and there are very limited amenities, so you are stuck with the hotel restaurant rather than being able to go out and experience different kinds of food. 

As a result, when booking a hotel on the beach side of the bridge, check the surroundings and make sure there are enough amenities close by and that you are not too close to the bars and nightclubs on the beach front!  

Get to the Sun World of Halong!

The beach side also has the entrance to the huge amusement park – Sun World. This area is split into two – the amusement park – which has different rides etc and then the Zen garden / giant Ferris wheel/wax museum etc. 

To get from one section to the other when visiting Halong,  there is a need to enter from the beach side and then catch the huge double-storey cable car to the Zen Garden side which is located on the government side of Ha Long.

The other side of the bridge has a substantial town which offers a good range of shops as well as a small shopping centre – Vincom.

This side also houses Ha Long market – which is a fascinating place to visit with people selling a wide range of sea products – from crab to all kinds of sea shelled goodies and there are various stalls cooking fish products so you can sit and try some – fresh from the sea! 

Ha Long museum – which explores the local province is on the government side – looking like large pieces of coal jutting out from the ground, this museum is a fascinating place and well worth the entrance fee of 40,000 VND. Note that the museum can very crowded at weekends, so if visiting Halong at the weekend, you should try to go when it has just opened ( 9 am and then again at 1 pm as he closes 12 – 1 pm for lunch )

Finally, don’t forget Cat Ba Island!

If you are looking for the typical layout of a beach with the town nestling into the bay, then Ha Long is not really the place for you. Instead, you should travel onwards to Cat Ba Island. This is a small island which is easily reached by boat ( there is a standard service ) and offers more of your typical beach resort needs. 

Overall, once you understand the basic set up of the city when visiting Halong, it is easy to sort out your priorities and thereby which side you need to stay on – it is a fascinating place and offers a lot to the traveller – as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, it is certainly worth a visit!

What does a limousine in Vietnam look like? 

A limousine in Vietnam is the same size as a typical minibus, however, with an unusual minibus there are typically about 15 seats (including the two at the front ) and it is a bench-type system with three or four people sitting directly next to each other. 

In a limousine, there are four individual seats inside, all of which recline- and have sides and armrests – in the main section. 

At the back of the limousine are three seats – these are all together – however, each seat is demarcated, and they are already at an incline. 

At the front of the bus, there are only normal seats that you would find in a usual minibus – i.e., a joint seat, with the central seat being right next to the driver and the other next to the door. 

Why use a limousine instead of a minibus? 

The main reason why limousines are used is the comfort level – it is obviously much more comfortable to have your own luxurious “armchair “inside a minibus instead of being squashed on a shared seat. 

In addition, a limousine in Vietnam also offers the service of picking up and dropping you off at your hotel. Although some bus services also offer this (although this service is usually at the beach destinations rather than in the towns) this is a great advantage and saves you from having to drag your luggage to the main bus station or the allocated bus pick up place. 

Please note that often a car will come and pick you up from your destination if you are located in the central area and it is busy. This is because it is easier for a car to navigate the traffic and then after picking you up, it will inevitably drive around and pick other people up from their hotels. This works both ways – i.e., when leaving the town/city and when entering – so don’t be worried when you are returning and suddenly the limousine stops and everyone gets off – they are all simply moving to the traffic efficient form of transportation! 

How to book a limousine in Vietnam

A  limousine in Vietnam can be booked easily online – there are often options to pay there and then with your card or pay whilst on the limousine. They do cost more than the standard minibus but when you compare prices it is easy to see that it is worth a lot of comfort for a small price! 

The prices for the seats varies according to the seat that you book. 

The most expensive seats are the four self contained armchair type seats, with the second most expensive being the shared back seat. 

Seats in a limousine are luxurious 

The cheapest seats on a limousine in Vietnam are the front seats -which are much more “normal “standard. The seat by the door is fine, however, if you get trapped in the central front seat – stuck between the driver on one side and another passenger on the other, it is not the most comfortable! Please note that in the front seat there may or may not be seat belts – so this is also something to consider. 

When you book you will be given a selection of times to choose from – please note that these times are not exact (except if you are at the starting point ) as the car is going around picking people up, so there will inevitably be delays with people not getting in the car on time or traffic etc. 

To assist with this, you are initially given a fifteen or even thirty minute time frame in which you will be picked up – for example, between 4.30 – 4.45 pm – so that you have some idea and can get ready. The company will typically then call you when they are about five minutes away so that you can be standing at the hotel entrance. 

It is important to note that typically these companies have absolutely no English so you will need someone to help you work out what they are saying. It is understood in Vietnam that foreigners will not be able to understand Vietnamese, so people are very happy to help with translation – so if you do find yourself in the street and the limousine company are on the phone it is fine to put the phone on speaker and ask someone in the street to help you! 

How is the journey on a limousine in Vietnam? 

As expected, limousine journeys are quite smooth – typically drivers who care more about the vehicle and thus do not simply bounce over bumps in the road or skid around corners. With blankets provided and air conditioning, the journey is usually rather nice and it is easy to lean back and look at the view or snooze.

The limousine will stop at designed larger “ service stations “ for at least a toilet break ( which will be about ten minutes ) or a food break ( which will be about twenty minutes )  It is important to make sure that you know when the limousine will be setting off again so that you don’t miss it ( simply hold up a number of fingers and you will get a response ) and to check what your limousine looks like so that you get back on the correct one! 

The ” service stations “ in Vietnam vary tremendously from quite decent ones with clean toilets, a shop ( which is a little expensive ) and various food options to those which need resolve to visit the toilet and the cleanliness of the food area leaves a lot to be desired! 

Overall, a limousine is a great way to travel if you are going a shorter distance – although more expensive than the usual form of transport, it is well worth the little bit extra and although not up to a real “limousine “experience, it is a little bit of luxury nonetheless! How to get a tax refund at Vietnam airport?

In order to receive a tax refund, passengers must buy goods at business establishments conducting a pilot sale of VAT refund goods in Vietnam and bring such goods with them when leaving the country.

What types of goods are eligible for tax refund?

– Belonging to the group subject to VAT, have not been used and are allowed to be brought on board in accordance with the law on aviation safety;

– Goods not on the List of goods banned from export or the List of goods restricted from export;

– There are invoices cum tax refund declarations issued within 60 days before exit procedures;

– The value of goods stated on the invoice cum tax refund declaration purchased at 1 store in 1 day (including adding multiple purchase invoices in the same day at 1 store) is at least 2 million VND or more.

What documents do you need to get a tax refund at Vietnam airport?

1. In case VAT refunded goods are placed in checked baggage:

Passengers present goods and related documents as follows for customs inspection:

– Goods with VAT refund;

– Passport (original);

– Invoice cum tax refund declaration certified by a qualified business establishment and stamped with the customs authority’s “Agreement for tax refund” stamp (original).

Note: Passengers who need a tax refund must check-in early to promptly complete the procedures at the tax refund counter (near departure gate 8-9).

2. In case VAT refunded goods are placed in hand luggage:

After completing the check-in procedure, passengers bring the following goods and documents to the counter to the tax refund counter for customs inspection and tax refund procedures:

– Goods with VAT refund;

– Passport (original);

– Boarding pass;

– Invoice cum tax refund declaration certified by a qualified business establishment and stamped with the customs authority’s “Agreement for tax refund” stamp (original).

How much will I get and when will I receive the VAT refund?

Passengers will receive an amount of refund as 85% of the total amount of VAT amount noted in the invoice, as well as stated in the VAT refund declaration form.

The other amount of 15% is charged as a refunding fee for the bank. In genereal, you uiwll be able to receive the refund immediately right after you finish the VAT refund procedure.

Where can I purchase goods that are applicable for a VAT refund at Vietnam airports?

Apparently you can shop at most of the shopping malls in HCM city such as Parkson, Diamond Plaza, Vincom,  Takashimaya, Gigamall, Crescent Mall…
