The street itself 

When you walk down the street in Vietnam, the first thing you will notice is the fact that although many roads have pavements, these are not dedicated to pedestrians and instead are crowded with motorbikes, small stools, and mini tables for cafes, sellers of various goods and even some rounded cages for animals such as chickens and roosters. This means that you have to have your wits about you as you need to be vigilant of all these things that you need to avoid rather than simply walking in a straight line along the pavement as you may well expect.

In addition to the crowded pavement, it is important to note that unlike the West in which pavements are required to be constantly maintained so that they are smooth and easy to walk on, in Vietnam the pavement may well have holes (some of which are quite large) and sections which have come away, etc. This means that you do need to look at where you are stepping instead of confidently striding ahead. On the positive side, however, these very uneven pavements are very good for your hips as the uneven surface makes your hips work more than they would on a flat surface – there is always a positive side to everything!!

The rubbish 

As you walk down the street in Vietnam, although there are rubbish trucks, the majority of the cleaning of the street in the middle of the towns is done by people in the shops directly behind the pavement. It is a common sight to see the shop keeper starting their day by sweeping the area in front so that is nice and clean – and this means that on the pavement itself, there is little rubbish spread around. However, in the area between the edge of the road and the pavement, there are often small rubbish piles where people have swept it all and it will be collected later on. It doesn’t interfere with your walking that much – simply step over or around it.

The motorbikes 

Motorbikes are the biggest problem on the pavement for two main reasons when you walk down the street in Vietnam. The first is that motorbikes often travel on the pavements – this may be because there is a traffic jam on the road so bikers are making a detour on the pavement or alternatively if the street is a one-way street then bikers will travel on the pavement the wrong way.

Although there are parking areas, typically most shops will not have a parking area nearby and since most of their customers will travel to the shop by motorbike, then when they wish to visit the shop they will simply park outside the shop on the pavement. This often means that the pavement is totally full of motorbikes and there is no space to pass by when walking. If this is the case, then you need to make a detour into the road ( being vigilant for motorbikes as you need to have the awareness that motorbikes may be coming in both directions ).

Pop up cafes 

You will find that when you walk down the street in Vietnam, it is a place where people eat – although some cafes have proper awnings etc and the street section is part of the main café, the majority of them are simply pop-up cafes. The most popular will be a kind of cart which has all of the cooking materials on it and serves as the kitchen area. One section of the cart will have carried the mini stools and these are then spread out on the pavement to become the seating area. This means that the whole pavement will be taken up with stools and people eating, thus you have a choice to either walk in between the people and thus potentially disturb their eating or skirt around them – walking in the road.

The sellers 

You will find that in the centre of towns/cities (particularly in the tourist areas ) there are a lot of sellers – these can be people who have a cloth laid out on a cart or on the floor and have spread goods out on them or have a cart with items to sell on. In addition, there will be many ladies with the traditional double baskets balanced on a pole which is carried along on a shoulder. These ladies typically sell fruit or snacks and can be quite persistent. One common ploy is to seem to give you something – it is a natural reaction to accept something which someone is giving you – however, once you have accepted it then you need to purchase it!

When you walk down the street in Vietnam, it is important to remember that the people who are selling on the street are not there for fun – this is their livelihood and they have hard lives. As a result, although it is easy to be irritated with people badgering you to buy things, it is better to simply decline if you don’t want anything or purchase with a smile if you do!

The selfies

As you walk down the street in Vietnam you will find people taking photographs everywhere you look. Photographs are immensely popular in Vietnam and you will find that there are lots of photo opportunity places set up in tourist areas and shops so that people can have an amazing background for their selfies. 

As a foreigner, you will find that many people are keen to have their photograph taken with you ( with this being even more popular the more you leave the cities) It is up to you whether you want to have your photo taken or not – it is fine to politely say no if you don’t want to and very easy to just smile at the camera if you chose to do so! 

When walking down the street you will sometimes invariably need to step in front of the photo-taking to carry on your path – although you can try and wait until the photo has been taken you will find that the photographs are not simply a point and press as in the West but much more of an elaborate set up with various poses and things to hold etc – so it is not easy to wait. Instead, use your judgement of politeness – pause a little before you march straight in front and try to let people see that you are going to walk ahead so that they can hold off for a second or two. 

 Overall, the street in Vietnam is an amazing place – full of energy and life. It is not easy to simply walk down the street in a straight line with all that is going on in the lively street but as long as you are not trying to march from A to B at high speed then you will find it a place of fun and excitement – so accept it for what it is – and take time to meander instead of walk.

What does a limousine in Vietnam look like? 

A limousine in Vietnam is the same size as a typical minibus, however, with an unusual minibus there are typically about 15 seats (including the two at the front ) and it is a bench-type system with three or four people sitting directly next to each other. 

In a limousine, there are four individual seats inside, all of which recline- and have sides and armrests – in the main section. 

At the back of the limousine are three seats – these are all together – however, each seat is demarcated, and they are already at an incline. 

At the front of the bus, there are only normal seats that you would find in a usual minibus – i.e., a joint seat, with the central seat being right next to the driver and the other next to the door. 

Why use a limousine instead of a minibus? 

The main reason why limousines are used is the comfort level – it is obviously much more comfortable to have your own luxurious “armchair “inside a minibus instead of being squashed on a shared seat. 

In addition, a limousine in Vietnam also offers the service of picking up and dropping you off at your hotel. Although some bus services also offer this (although this service is usually at the beach destinations rather than in the towns) this is a great advantage and saves you from having to drag your luggage to the main bus station or the allocated bus pick up place. 

Please note that often a car will come and pick you up from your destination if you are located in the central area and it is busy. This is because it is easier for a car to navigate the traffic and then after picking you up, it will inevitably drive around and pick other people up from their hotels. This works both ways – i.e., when leaving the town/city and when entering – so don’t be worried when you are returning and suddenly the limousine stops and everyone gets off – they are all simply moving to the traffic efficient form of transportation! 

How to book a limousine in Vietnam

A  limousine in Vietnam can be booked easily online – there are often options to pay there and then with your card or pay whilst on the limousine. They do cost more than the standard minibus but when you compare prices it is easy to see that it is worth a lot of comfort for a small price! 

The prices for the seats varies according to the seat that you book. 

The most expensive seats are the four self contained armchair type seats, with the second most expensive being the shared back seat. 

Seats in a limousine are luxurious 

The cheapest seats on a limousine in Vietnam are the front seats -which are much more “normal “standard. The seat by the door is fine, however, if you get trapped in the central front seat – stuck between the driver on one side and another passenger on the other, it is not the most comfortable! Please note that in the front seat there may or may not be seat belts – so this is also something to consider. 

When you book you will be given a selection of times to choose from – please note that these times are not exact (except if you are at the starting point ) as the car is going around picking people up, so there will inevitably be delays with people not getting in the car on time or traffic etc. 

To assist with this, you are initially given a fifteen or even thirty minute time frame in which you will be picked up – for example, between 4.30 – 4.45 pm – so that you have some idea and can get ready. The company will typically then call you when they are about five minutes away so that you can be standing at the hotel entrance. 

It is important to note that typically these companies have absolutely no English so you will need someone to help you work out what they are saying. It is understood in Vietnam that foreigners will not be able to understand Vietnamese, so people are very happy to help with translation – so if you do find yourself in the street and the limousine company are on the phone it is fine to put the phone on speaker and ask someone in the street to help you! 

How is the journey on a limousine in Vietnam? 

As expected, limousine journeys are quite smooth – typically drivers who care more about the vehicle and thus do not simply bounce over bumps in the road or skid around corners. With blankets provided and air conditioning, the journey is usually rather nice and it is easy to lean back and look at the view or snooze.

The limousine will stop at designed larger “ service stations “ for at least a toilet break ( which will be about ten minutes ) or a food break ( which will be about twenty minutes )  It is important to make sure that you know when the limousine will be setting off again so that you don’t miss it ( simply hold up a number of fingers and you will get a response ) and to check what your limousine looks like so that you get back on the correct one! 

The ” service stations “ in Vietnam vary tremendously from quite decent ones with clean toilets, a shop ( which is a little expensive ) and various food options to those which need resolve to visit the toilet and the cleanliness of the food area leaves a lot to be desired! 

Overall, a limousine is a great way to travel if you are going a shorter distance – although more expensive than the usual form of transport, it is well worth the little bit extra and although not up to a real “limousine “experience, it is a little bit of luxury nonetheless! The signature of a wedding in Vietnam must be…a lot of alcohol. Whether it’s greeting, giving a speech or even playing music to wait for the bride and groom to enter, Vietnamese can raise a glass and drink wine/beer. When you hear “Một hai ba dô”, you should have a glass of wine in hand and join everyone.

The most typical food in every wedding

Food at weddings is also very diverse, however, it is often wrapped up in a few typical dishes. A wedding in Vietnam will usually always have seafood salad, “nem – chả”, boiled shrimp, “chả ram” and hot pot.

What gift should you bring to a Vietnamese wedding?

Unlike the Western wedding gift nightmare where you have to choose the right present that the bride and groom want, a wedding in Vietnam are easy when everything you need to bring when going to the wedding is…money.

Costumes

And finally, the most pleasant part of a Vietnamese wedding is probably the costumes. At traditional weddings, which are characterised by open-air theatres, using round tables and popular red chairs, the men’s outfit is usually only wrapped in a suit and sometimes, you just need a polo, a polite jean and a simple sneaker. As for women, you can wear a simple dress, it doesn’t have to be too discreet but it shouldn’t be too revealing. Ao Dai is a cultural symbol as well as a dress that shows the solemnity and seriousness of the person who’s wearing it. Women when coming to a wedding in Vietnam, especially the elderly, often wear ao dai. However, to avoid becoming too outdated, expat should wear innovative ao dai styles or have rejuvenated details. This is act of respect toward the Vietnamese tradition, while at the same time it still makes you look good and relevant

Besides, Vietnamese people are also very amused every time they see foreigners wearing their traditional costume at a wedding in Vietnam

However, if you do not have an ao dai available, a party dress can also do the trick that is polite enough when going to a wedding in Vietnam.

The majority of guys in Vietnam wear suits when attending weddings, which seems to save them more time than ladies. A black or grey suit is formal enough. However, guys can also wear jeans and shirts to be more comfortable at the weddings without occupy the spotlight of the groom.

As I said above, for a typical traditional wedding in Vietnam, you only need clothes like jeans and polo for men or simple dresses for women. However, we are living in the 21st century, Western-style weddings have begun to be introduced into Vietnam. 

Western-style Vietnamese weddings are usually gala dinners held in restaurants or at resorts rented by the bride and groom’s family. Attending these weddings, a simple polo shirt and jeans seem out of place. Attendees are usually announced about the dress code. Men will wear a polite suit, usually black, white or cream depending on the dress code, women often wear gorgeous evening dresses with a stunning makeup layout.

What not to wear to a wedding in Vietnam?

It is important to know what not to wear to a Vietnamese wedding. A wedding in Vietnam are very important occasions for both the bride and groom’s families. They put a lot of effort into the preparation and it is considered bad luck if someone from the bride or groom’s side attends in inappropriate attire. Many people are not aware of the cultural differences and then feel awkward.

Usually, brides in Vietnam often wear white wedding dresses with traditional Vietnamese costumes of red or yellow colour. Women attendees, as a matter of fact, have to avoid these colours.

Contrary to men, a suit does not seem to be suitable for women coming to a wedding in Vietnam when it is too formal and makes you look like some managers on your way signing an important contract.

Where is it located in Phu Yen?

Tuy Hoa is set towards the South of Vietnam – about an hour and a half from Hanoi by plane. It is down from Quy Nhon (a popular beach location) and up from Nha Trang (another popular place ) It is officially a city and has one super long sandy beach as well as a rather spread out city area. 

How to get there?

When you are browsing flights, Tuy An- Phu Yen does not pop up – it does not appear on Google searches for beaches in Vietnam etc, so you have to specifically look for flights to Tuy An. As it is not a popular tourist destination then there are only a couple of flights there a day from Hanoi or major cities – however, these flights are conveniently timed – arriving or leaving at about 1 pm, with another flight in the early evening. 

Tuy An airport is very small – more of a small building in the middle of nowhere rather than an airport per se. There are only two terminals although there is a café and a few shops which mainly sell frozen fish of various kinds. There is a bus to take you to the plane, however, sometimes you simply walk across the tarmac to the plane!

Although there is internet, it is almost impossible to connect to (which is important if you were planning on catching a grab ) To get into the town, there are lots of metred taxis directly outside so it is easy to simply jump in a taxi and travel the 10 minutes or so ( about 100,000 VND cost ) into Tuy Hoa. Travelling by Grab a car would be about 75,000 VND and a grab bike about 40,000 VND.

Staying at a beach hotel

Unusually for a coastal town, rather than the whole town being focussed around the beach, the main town is set quite a way back from the beach (about a 20 minute walk ) so you need to choose between hotels in the city and walk ( or catch a grab) daily to the beach or stay at a beach hotel.

Although there are a lot of hotels situated in the main town however there are two real alternatives near the beach – Sala – which is a 5 star hotel and Saigon Phu Yen Hotel – which is supposed to be a 4 star hotel. These are two very different properties – Sala costs about 1. 3 million per night, however, really is 5 star with lots of attentive staff, a pool on the beach etc. On the other hand, as the only hotel directly on the main beach, it is very popular so is busy all round year – especially with the addition of team training groups who use the area for very large group events complete with loud music and mega loud microphones! 

The alternative is Saigon Phu Yen hotel – which is advertised as 4 stars but in reality, is a 3 star at most – the pool has a blank concrete setting, the buffet breakfast isn’t available if there aren’t many guests and it has a general feeling of once being something more. However, it is much quieter than Sala as much less popular, which means you often get the pool to yourself, and the staff are enthusiastic and kind. Prices start at about 700,000 VND per night 

Swimming, having beers, discovering the nature of Phu Yen

The beach consists of miles and miles of sand – however, please note that the sea is always very rough with quite a strong current so although you can paddle and splash in the water, it is not possible to swim in the water. 

There is an area next to Sala hotel where there are deckchairs and you can buy a warm beer for 20, 000 VND, or alternatively, you can sit at the outdoor bar in Sala and have a cold beer (23, 000 VND )  fresh juices ( 65,000 VND ) or cocktails ( 95,000 VND )

There are lots of attractions outside the town, however, in the town itself, the best attraction is Nhan Temple – which is a Cham tower. It is located on the outskirts of the town – easy to walk a mile or so from the city or get a grab car or bike which will take you to the bottom of the mountain on which Nhan Temple is located on. 

Entrance to the Nhan Temple is free – there is a map at the entrance to tell you of the main sights in the complex and there are paved roads and signs throughout – so although you are walking upwards up the mountain it is not trekking – instead walking up a paved area.

There is also a very large and attractive park in the centre of Tuy Hoa – with pools and bridges and definitely worth a visit!

Where to shop for snacks / drinks

Although there are lots of small shops, these inevitably price everything a little more than a supermarket and have a limited variety. There are two chain supermarkets in Tuy Hoa – Winmart (that used to be called Vinmart) is in the town’s one and only shopping mall (which also houses Highlands Coffee/ the fast food restaurant Lotteria  as well as the town cinema ) as well as Co-op which is tucked away from the main street which also houses the fast food restaurant, Jollie Bee )

Overall, Tuy Hoa is a delightful place to visit in Phu Yen– although easy to visit it is somehow off the beaten path at the same time – with the sight of a foreigner still causing nudges (and sometimes a shout) as they are spotted few and far between. With so much to offer, it will only be a matter of time before the high rises sprout up along the beaches and Tuy Hoa will become a totally different place – so make the effort and visit now- before it is too late!

1. The subjects who must participate in social insurance for foreigners in Vietnam

According to the provisions of Article 2 of Decree 143/2018/ND-CP, employees who are foreign citizens working in Vietnam are eligible to participate in compulsory social insurance for foreigners in Vietnam when:

Having a work permit or a practicing certificate or a practicing license issued by a competent Vietnamese agency and having an indefinite-term labor contract or a definite-term labor contract for a full 01 year or more with an employer in Vietnam.

Except for the following two cases:

– Foreign workers who move within an enterprise are managers, executives, experts and technical workers of a foreign enterprise that has established a commercial presence in the Vietnamese territory that temporarily transferred within the enterprise to a commercial presence in the Vietnamese territory and has been employed by the foreign enterprise for at least 12 months before.

– Having reached the prescribed retirement age:

The retirement age of employees under normal working conditions is adjusted according to the roadmap until reaching 62 years of age for male employees in 2028 and full 60 years of age for female employees in 2035.

From 2021, the retirement age of employees under normal working conditions is 60 years and 03 months for male employees and 55 years and 04 months for female employees. After that, this number increases every year by 03 months for male employees and 04 months for female employees.

2. The different rates of social insurance for foreigners in Vietnam

According to the provisions of Articles 12 and 13 of Decree 143/2018/ND-CP and Resolution 68/NQ-CP, the social insurance premium payment rate for foreigners is based on the monthly salary on which social insurance premiums are based. which corresponds to the following ratios:

As can be seen, employees and employers will start contributing to retirement and death gratuity from January 1, 2022.

3. Salary as the basis for payment of social insurance for foreigners in Vietnam

Pursuant to Article 14 of Decree 143/2018/ND-CP, the salary used as the basis for paying social insurance premiums for foreign workers is determined as follows:

* For ordinary foreign workers:

The monthly salary on which social insurance premiums are based includes salary, salary allowances and other additional amounts as prescribed.

* For foreign workers as business managers:

The monthly salary on which social insurance premiums are based is the salary decided by the enterprise he/she manages.

Note: The salary for paying social insurance premiums of foreigners is limited as follows:

– The lowest monthly salary for which compulsory social insurance is paid = Regional minimum salary at the time of payment.

4. Benefits for foreigners when participating in social insurance for foreigners in Vietnam

Clause 1, Article 5 of Decree 143/2018/ND-CP stipulates the regimes of compulsory social insurance applicable to foreign workers as follows:

The employees specified in Clause 1, Article 2 of this Decree shall have the following compulsory social insurance regimes: sickness; maternity; occupational accident and occupational disease insurance; retirement and death gratuity.

Before 2022, foreign workers will only be entitled to sickness benefits; maternity; occupational accident and occupational disease insurance because the enterprise only pays insurance for these 03 funds.

From January 1, 2022, employees and users will start contributing to retirement and death gratuity. Therefore, when meeting the conditions prescribed by law, foreign workers will enjoy full benefits including retirement and death gratuity.
