Do you know which type of houses for rent in Vietnam are right for you? If you are new to Vietnam, this article will be very helpful for you to choose a safe place to stay in our country. Take a look at the directory to see what types of rentals are available in general!

1. Shared hostel- a common type of houses for rent in Vietnam

A type of motel room where the landlord and the tenant will live in the same building with the same path and the same living place. Because of the same owner, you will be living in a very disciplined environment, with regulations on hours and styles of living. Not only that, there are some landlords who also cook for the residents. Here you will not have to worry about many issues such as theft, security and tenants are often carefully selected.

However, this type of houses for rent in Vietnam also comes with many inconveniences. First of all, there is the inconvenience of living with the landlord as there will be a curfew and closing time.

Next is the common area. If you live with a roommate, not washing the dishes may be okay. But if you live with the owner, if you don’t wash the dishes, you will definitely be reminded. In addition, if the owner is difficult, you will easily encounter problems and difficulties when staying there.

2. Apartment

This is a type of houses for rent in Vietnam where the landlord sublets a room in an apartment or the whole apartment for rent. This type is often sought by young people with high incomes because the apartment room for rent is usually the room with the most furniture and the most spacious living space.

Here you will not have to worry about safety because the apartment is always guaranteed about security. In addition, the living space will often be at a higher standard than other models. Usually, the apartment will have its kitchen, bedroom and living room built separately.

Accompanying these facilities is a rather expensive price tag. This is the biggest reason many of you don’t come to this model. Along with the high price, here the tenants will have to take care of all other accommodation costs such as parking, management costs, etc. In addition, you will have to take care of all the furniture in the room. If there is damage and loss, the tenants are the ones responsible.

3. Mini apartment

Mini apartment is a type of apartment with a small area from 24m2 – 40m2. A mini apartment is like an apartment room where all the utilities of an apartment such as kitchen, bedroom, and office are packed together in one room with a reasonable and compact design. This is the type of houses for rent in Vietnam that many tenants are in favor of. For renters, this is a model for those who want to find an apartment but don’t have much money.

4. Homestays

Homestay is a form of accommodation that combines a serviced apartment and a dormitory. This model uses bunk beds and shared living spaces to make the most of the living space. This is the most prominent model today, favored by both landlords and tenants.

The tenants will have full use of services from refrigerators, air conditioners, kitchens, cleaning to birth, … but only at a cheap price of 1 million – 2 million / month.

5. Self-managed hostel

This type of houses for rent in Vietnam has rooms that are separate from each other. All the rooms are fully equipped with living space, and the tenants live separately from the owner. Since there are not too many rules to follow, you will have more freedom when staying here.

However, there will also be many problems with this type of housing. The model of self-managed motels is the model with the lowest security among the motel models. Because it is self-managed, everybody has access to the same gate. If someone forgets to close the gate or let strangers in, it can easily lead to the occurrence of theft.

We hope that our teachers will find our article about houses for rent in Vietnam useful. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to leave your comments right below!

When you have been in Vietnam for a while it is inevitable that at some stage you will need to take your passport picture. You may be familiar with the procedure in the West and start looking around for the photo booth to self-print your photos – however, you may be surprised to find that although there are some photo booths in shopping malls there are not for the clear type of photograph you are looking for but instead for fun group photos only.

Instead, in Vietnam, if you need passport-style photographs then you need to visit a shop which will do it all – combining the photo, the touch-up and the printing.

Finding a place to have your passport picture taken

You will find that there are a huge amount of places that you can go to and have your passport picture taken. It is not always super obvious however where to have your photo taken – you may be used to looking for a fancy photography studio type of place – although these studios do exist these are for the very popular photo shoots of the new baby / the wedding couple etc.

Instead, most photo places double up as a photocopy shop. The word in Vietnamese is the same – so a good way to start is to look for shops which have the words “ photo copy “ on the sign above the shop. Some of the shops also have a large sign with a photograph sample on it to indicate that they do passport picture – although this is only for some and not all. As a result, it is a good idea to go into a shop which has the photography sign and ask. And even if they do not have the photo option they should be able to guide you to the shop along the road which does.

Having your passport picture taken

Once you have worked out that the shop has photography services then you may be surprised to find that rather than going off to a separate room for the photo, in Vietnam, you simply stand in front of a curtain or screen in a corner of the room.

Some places may have a mirror so that you can check yourself  but this is not guaranteed.

If there are other people in the shop then you will be of great interest. Things will stop whilst everyone in the shop turns to view the excitement of a foreigner in the shop having their photo taken. However there is a need to simply accept this with a smile.

You may be concerned that with such primitive setups whether the photographs will come out of a good enough quality. However, you will be surprised to find that although it all looks basic – what comes out at the end is of a high quality.

Photograph shops may look basic but the result will be great!

Explaining your needs

If you are having your photograph for a visa then you need to have looked up all the precise guidelines and have those with you. Vietnamese photographers are not typically aware of the exact needs. For example, with a passport picture in the UK, the eyes have to be within a certain proportion of the photo. So, it is important that you take control of these guidelines so that you get a photograph that suits your needs.

After the photograph is taken you will be able to see it on the computer screen so you can guide the photographer further. They are quite happy to alter it according to your needs so do take your time to make sure your photograph meets standards.

Touching up your passport picture

In the West, if you have a photograph taken there are usually no – or at most – minimal touch-ups to the photographs. However, in Vietnam it is typical to spend time completing a lot of touching up – from removing any spots or blemishes on the skin ( including wrinkles ! ) / removing stray hairs that spoil the slick look / changing your skin colour so that you are a little lighter etc.

It is hard to explain that you don’t want touch-ups ( especially if they are for a passport ) so be prepared for the photographs to be similar but not exactly like you! – sometimes this can be to your advantage and you can look great, however, at other times you can look a bit odd!

Price and size

There are a lot of different sizes of photographs available in Vietnam – from super tiny to large. There will typically be samples on the counter. So if you are unsure of the exact name of the passport picture size you need then you can simply point.

Photographs are cheap in Vietnam. At the time of writing ( 2022 ) they are usually about 40,000 VND for a set of 4 passport size photographs. Prices are not typically displayed in the shop. However, be sure to ask the price before you have your photograph taken so that you are sure of what you are paying before you start.

Timing

The process of having your photograph taken, touched up and printed is remarkably quick. There is rarely a wait – so you simply walk in, have your passport picture taken in the corner, wait for a few minutes and then the photographs are printed out with the whole process taking about ten minutes.

Overall, getting your passport picture in Vietnam is a simple and quick procedure. There are a lot of shops where you can get it done and despite the shop often looking as if it would not be able to achieve something great, you will be surprised at the great quality and the ease which the whole process takes – so don’t worry when you inevitably need your photographs. It is all simple and easy!

Yes, you need to know what you want to do and where you can work. If you simply want a job teaching English to children in Vietnam, there are many offers for you. In addition, if you are looking for a position that allows you to work with adults more, or just focus on Speaking skills, you can still find it on our website vietnamteachingjobs.com. 2. Consider the criteria of that job

Now look at the qualifications, documents and skills requirements of the job you want. Which of these criteria can you satisfy?

Keep in mind that the more skills and legal documents you meet to teach in Vietnam, the more likely you are to get a sponsorship by an employer to enter and work. If you already have a college or university degree, the rest of the requirements are fairly easy to meet.

Now let’s take a look at the other basic criteria for an expat to qualify for teaching English in Vietnam, in case you have already owned a college degree:

  • Have a decent accent and a good command of English grammar
  • An international English teaching certificate: TESOL, CELTA, TEFL,… or PGCEs
  • From 1 year experience in teaching English as a second language

As you can see, it’s an easy task for any foreigner to have a decent accent of English. You don’t need any qualification to prove that, you just have to speak or practice to get the best native accent that the Vietnamese employers look for in a candidate.

For having an international English teaching certificate, you can easily get one with at least 120 hours of studying. The most commonly-accepted teaching certificates are TESOL, TEFL or CELTA. There are a plenty of articles that provide information about these certificates, so you can have a look on your own. If you don’t want to look anywhere further, check out our TEFL provider here to start teaching English in Vietnam today!

In addition, the element of teaching experience is also quite important, but not always compulsory for any position. If you have no experience in this field, don’t worry, there will always be a teaching position in Vietnam to help you get started. However, it is very advantageous if you already have 1 year of experience. This means you can get an offer that provides a higher salary than a beginner, and have more chances to work at more reputable employers or larger-scaled schools.

3. Apply and contact the employer of the position you want to work for

If you feel ready to start a new life in Vietnam, do not hesitate to submit your application immediately. Visit our vietnamteachingjobs.com and you will get access to +70 new teacher vacancies every day in Vietnam (more than any other platform where you can find information about jobs for foreigners or teaching in Vietnam).

Apply and contact the employer of the position you want to work for

However, make sure you are contacting an employer who is also looking for candidates outside of Vietnam. Sometimes, in some cases, employers need to urgently hire teachers to keep up with the current needs of the market (school reopening, teacher shortage, new school year, …) , they will not give preference to candidates who are living abroad. You can see the section “support teachers outside of Vietnam” in every job posting on our website: if “YES” you are free to apply, but if “NO”, try your chance in other job postings.

This article will tell you what an Apostille is, and help you understand the similarities and differences between Apostille and Consular Legalization, and whether you can get an Apostille in our country.

1. What is an Apostille?

“Apostille” is a term that originated from France, which means certification. If a document is stamped with the Apostille certification stamp, it proves that the document is genuine, not a forgery.

An Apostille certificate verifies the signature and seal on a public document so that it can be used in one of the countries that have signed the Hague Convention (convention on exemption from legalization of foreign public documents). ). The authority to issue the Apostille Certificate is usually the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issuing the document to be used.

List of States Parties to the Hague Convention

Currently, there are 120 countries that have signed the Hague Convention to exempt consular legalization for documents of countries below:

As such, the Apostille certificate is only valid for use in member countries under the Hague Convention. Meanwhile, according to the above table, Vietnam is not a member of the Hague Convention (Hague), so in order to use Apostille documents, applicants will continue to have to take one more step at the Embassy/General consulate of Vietnam in foreign countries. This step is called Consular Legalization.

Papers, documents certified Apostille:

Not all documents of the Contracting States of the Hague Convention can be Apostille certified.

Basically, documents that are eligible for Apostille certification are divided into 2 categories as follows:

Public documents signed by a government official, for example:

  • Registration of marriage
  • Birth certificate
  • Death Certificate
  • Business registration certificate
  • Court order
  • The document has been signed by a notary or a Commissioner for Oaths

However, the following documents are not Apostille certified

  • Documents prepared by a consular or diplomatic officer
  • Administrative papers that are directly related to customs or commercial activities.
  • Benefits of Apostille Certification

Obviously, without doing consular legalization of documents that qualify for Apostille certification in aforementioned countries, the document holder was able to shorten the process by half. Thanks to that, it saves time, costs as well as effort to learn and implement the procedure.

2. What is consular legalization?

Read our article here to see everything you need to know about consular legalization.

What is the difference between Apostille and Consular Legalization?

As mentioned above, there are 2 processes that need to be followed to be able to use papers and documents in a country other than the issuing country, which is Apostille and Consular Legalization. Which process you need to go through will depend on the document type, issuing country, and country of use;

Apostilles:

For documents that are eligible for Apostille certification, if you intend to use the document in a member state of the Hague convention, simply apply for the Apostille stamp.
For example, if you have a birth certificate issued in the UK and want to use it in Korea, you can simply apply for an Apostille at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Affairs, and be able to use that document in Korea.

Consular legalization

If you have documents that are eligible for Apostille certification, but intend to use them in a country that is not a member of the Hague Convention, you will need to obtain an Apostille stamp from a competent authority of the issuing country, then apply for a consular legalization stamp from the embassy/consulate of the country that will use the document located in the issuing country.

For example, if you want to use a British birth certificate in Vietnam, you will need to obtain an Apostille at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Affairs, then apply for a consular legalization stamp from the Ambassador Consulate/Consulate General of Vietnam in the UK.

For documents that do not qualify for Apostille certification, or the issuing country is not part of the Hague Convention, you will need to apply for a consular stamp at the competent diplomatic mission of the issuing country, then apply the consular legalization stamp of the Embassy/Consulate of the country that will use the document is located in the issuing country. For example, Thai documents that want to be used in Vietnam will need consular certification at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand first, and then consular legalization at the Vietnamese Embassy/Thailand.

Thus, when you use documents in a country belonging to The Hague, the Apostille certified documents will not have to go through the consular legalization step at the Embassy of the country where they are used.

Since Vietnam is not a member of the Hague Convention, except for papers exempted from consular legalization/certification, all foreign documents that want to be used in Vietnam and vice versa must go through consular legalization. However, this is not an easy procedure, especially for those who are doing consular legalization for the first time.

We hope that this article has given you some useful information about the difference between Apostille and Consular Legalization. See you in the next articles!
